戦記1巻p67〜 古い神々

思い切り次回予告外しました。序盤のリヴァーウィンドは影に徹していて見せ場がないんですよね。

The woman took the lute with hands that trembled visibly. Her companion seemed to make a whispered protest, but she did not hear him. Her eyes were held fast by the glittering black eyes of the old man. Slowly, as if in a trance, she began to strum the lute. As the melancholy chords drifted through the common room, conversations ceased. Soon, everyone was watching her, but she did not notice. Goldmoon sang for the old man alone.

　女は、ひとめでわかるほど震えている手にリュートを取った。連れの男が抗議をささやいたが、女は聞いていなかった。彼女の目は老人の光る黒い目にしっかりとつなぎとめられている。ゆっくりと、夢幻状態に陥ったかのように、彼女はリュートを爪弾きはじめた。物憂い和音が部屋に漂うと、会話は途絶えた。まもなく、全員の視線が集中したが、彼女はそれにも気付いていない。ゴールドムーンは、ひとり老人のためだけに歌った。

“Why did they leave us?” the little boy asked.
“He did not leave us,” the old man answered, and his smile grew sad. “Men left him after the dark days of the Cataclysm. They blamed the destruction of the world on the gods, instead of on themselves, as they should have done. Have you ever heard ‘Canticle of the Dragon’?”

「なぜその神さまはぼくたちから離れていったの」
「神さまが離れていったんじゃない」老人は答えたが、そのほほえみは悲しげになった。「＜大変動＞の暗い日々のあと、人々のほうから離れていったんじゃ。人々は世界が滅びたことを、自分たちではなく神さまのせいにした。ほんとうは人間のせいなのに。＜竜の頌歌＞を聞いたことがあるかね」

さあどうなんでしょうね。＜大変動＞とは、神々とは。
関連して、ずっと先の話に飛びます。


“Oh,yes,” the boy said eagerly. “I love stories about dragons, though papa says dragons never existed. I believe in them, though. I hope to see one someday!”
The old man’s face seemed to age and grow sorrowful. He stroked the young boy’s hair. “Be careful what you wish, my child,” he said softly. Then he fell silent.

「うん、あるよ」少年は熱っぽく言った。「ドラゴンのお話は好きさ。パパはドラゴンはつくり話だっていうけど。でもぼくはほんとうにいると思うよ。いつか見てみたいなあ！」
　老人の顔が、年老いて悲痛になったように見えた。かれは幼い少年の髪をなでた。「願い事をするときには気をつけるんだよ」そっと言うと、彼は沈黙した。

　願い事には気をつけましょう。叶ってしまうかも知れないから。

“I cannot believe in you!” Tanis cried. “What kind of gods are you, that you demand a human sacrifice? You are the same gods who brought the Cataclysm down on man. All right--so you’re powerful! Now leave us alone! We don’t need you!”

「おれはあんた方なんて信じられない！」タニスは叫んだ。「いったいどんな神々なんです。人に犠牲を強いるなんて？あんた方は人々の上に＜大変動＞をもたらしたのと同じ神々なんだ。いいでしょう――強大な力をお持ちなんだ！だったらもう放っといてください！おれたちにはあんた方なんていらない！」

　ゴールドムーンがミシャカルの円盤と引き換えに燃え尽き、命からがら脱出した直後のシーンです。この場では、ゴールドムーンが甦ってめでたく終わっています。しかしタニスの叫びに答えは返ってきません。戦記5巻では鮮血海の底でゼビュラが、伝説3巻では疫病の村で若い司祭が、繰り返し問うています。
