Raistlin, seeing the others engrossed in looking at the map, beckoned to his brother.
“Is the plan still the same?” the mage whispered.
“Yes.” Caramon frowned. “And I don’t like it. I should go with you.”

　レイストリンはほかの者が地図に気を取られているのを見て、兄に目配せした。

「計画に変わりは？」と、ささやく。
「ない」キャラモンは眉を寄せた。「なあ、おれは気に入らんよ。おれもおまえと一緒に行くべきだ」

“Nonsense,” Raistlin hissed. “You would only be in my way!” Then he added more gently, “I will be in no danger, I assure you.” He laid his hand on his twin’s arm and drew him close.

「ばかばかしい」レイストリンは鋭く言った。「ぼくの邪魔になるだけだ！」それから優しくつけ加える。「大丈夫、ぼくに危険はないよ」かれは双子の兄の手を取って引き寄せた。

Raistlin’s touch was unusually hot, his eyes burned. Caramon uneasily started to pull back, seeing something in his brother he hadn’t seen since the Towers of High Sorcery, but Raistlin’s hand clutched him.

　レイストリンの手はいつになく熱っぽく、目が燃えていた。キャラモンは弟の中に＜上位魔法の塔＞以来見ていなかったものを見て不安げに退こうとしたが、レイストリンの手はかれをつかんで離さなかった。

“What is it?”
“A spellbook!”
“So this is why you wanted to come to Xak-Tsaroth!”

「それはなんだ？」
「呪文書！」
「それでザク・ツァロスに来たかったのか！」

“You have never heard of him, my brother,” he said finally, in a whisper that forced Caramon to lean closer. “Yet he was one of the greatest of my order. His name was Fistandantilus.”

「兄さんの聞いたことのない名前だ」ようやくかれは口を開いた。低いささやき声なので、キャラモンは身をのり出した。「でも、最高の魔法使いの一人だ。名前はフィスタンダンティラス」

“The way you describe the spellbook--“ Caramon hesitated, fearing what Raistlin would reply. He swallowed and started over. “This Fistandantilus--did he wear the Black Robes?” He could not meet his brother’s piercing gaze.

「おまえが呪文書のことを言う口ぶりを聞いていると――」キャラモンは口ごもった。レイストリンの答えを聞くのは恐ろしいが、生唾をのみこんで続ける。「そのフィスタンダンティラスというのは――その人の着ていたのは＜黒いローブ＞か？」かれは弟の貫くような視線と目を合わせられなかった。

“Ask me no more!” Raistlin hissed. “You are as bad as the others! How can any of you understand me!”

「もう何も聞いてほしくない！」レイストリンは鋭く言った。「兄さんもみんなと同じだ！どうして誰もわかってくれないんだ！」

“Sure, Raist,” Caramon promised, soothing his brother. “Don’t get worked up. I’ll find it.”
“Good Caramon. Excellent Caramon,” Raistlin whispered when he could speak.

「わかった、レイスト」キャラモンはなだめながら約束する。「興奮しなくていい。おれが見つけてやる」
「優しいキャラモン。頼もしいキャラモン」しゃべれるようになると、レイストリンはそっとささやいた。

　私、そちらの趣味は全くないのですが、それでもこのシーンはレイストがキャラモンを誑かしてるようにしか見えません。ましてやその道の方にとっては如何に。…はいどうでもいいですね。タニス先生、締めてください。

Caramon would cheerfully shed the last drop of his blood for any member of the company, but Tanis suspected he would betray them all at Raistlin’s command.

　キャラモンは、一行の誰のためにでも喜んでその血の最後の一滴までも流してくれるだろうが、もしレイストリンが命じれば、かれら全員を裏切るのではないか……。タニスはそんな気がした。
