「これが、わが命令に逆らい、捕虜を認めようとした者の末路だ。死にたくなければ殺せ」

He remembered a dog--the only living they found in the entire village--curled around the body of a dead child. Caramon stopped to pet the small dog. The animal cringed, then licked the big man’s hand. It then licked the child’s cold face, looking up at the warrior hopefully, expecting this human to make everything all right, to make his little playmate run and laugh again.

　また、一匹の犬――村じゅうで見つけた唯一の生き残り――が、小さな子供の死体のまわりに丸くなっていたのを思い出した。キャラモンはその小犬をなでようと立ち止まった。犬はびくりとしたが、やがて大男の手をなめた。それから、子供の冷たい顔をなめながら、希望にあふれた目で戦士を見あげた。この人間がすべてちゃんとしてくれる、小さな遊び友だちと、また走ったり、笑ったりさせてくれるだろうと期待しているのだ。

He remembered Caramon stroking the dog’s soft fur with his huge hands.

He remembered Riverwind picking up a rock, holding it, aimlessly…

He remembered Sturm, standing transfixed before the gibett, staring at the sign…

He remembered the sorrow-lined face of the dwarf…patting Tasslehoff gently on his back…

He remembered Goldmoon’s frantic search for survivors.

He remembered a cold hand touching his arm and the mage’s whispering voice. “Tanis, we must leave. There is nothing more we can do and we must reach Xak-Tsaroth. Then we will have our revenge.”

　かれは、腕に触れた冷たい手と魔法使いのささやき声を覚えていた。「タニス、出発するべきです。もはやできることはありませんし、ぼくたちはザク・ツァロスに行かなくてはなりません。復讐はそれからです」

　繰り返されるタニスの “He remembered--“
　キィキィときしる絞首台の音を、キャラモンと小犬を、リヴァーウィンドを、スタームを、フリントと泣きじゃくるタッスルを、ゴールドムーンを、ドラコニアンの灰を「思い出した」タニス。しかし同じrememberedでも、冷たい手とささやき声は「覚えていた」のです。記憶すら映し出すのを拒否する凄惨な光景（his mind refuging to encompass the total awful vision）の中で、ただ一人前を向いていたかれのことだけは。

　訳者のセンスに沈黙する一節の一つであります。


　さて、ここまででやっと半分ですが、中の人は「廃都の黒竜の書」を読み終えたところです。レイストリンとブープーの別れのシーンを紹介するのが楽しみでなりません。
