“Tanis?” said Flint hesitantly as the man neared.
“The same.” The newcomer’s bearded face split in a wide grin. He held open his arms and, before the dwarf could stop him, engulfed Flint in a hug that lifted him off the ground. The dwarf clasped his old friend close for a brief instant, then, remembering his dignity, squirmed and freed himself from the half-elf’s embrace.

「タニスか？」フリントは近づいてくる男に、ためらいがちに声をかけた。
「そのとおり」新来者のひげ面から白い歯がこぼれた。そして両腕を開いて、とめる間もなくフリントを抱きかかえ、地面から持ちあげた。＜ドワーフ＞も旧友にひしと抱きついたが、たちまち威厳のことを思い出し、身をよじってこの＜ハーフ・エルフ＞の抱擁から逃れた。

“Well, you’ve learned no manners in five years,” the dwarf grumbled. “Still no respect for my age or my station. Hoisting me around like a sack of potatoes.” Flint peered down the road. “I hope no one who knows us saw us.”

「おまえさんは、五年もたったのにちっとも行儀を身につけとらん」＜ドワーフ＞はこぼした。「いまだに、わしの年齢にも立場にも尊敬をはらっとらん。じゃがいも袋か何かのようにつりあげおって」フリントは道の先をうかがった。「知り合いに見られたりしたら恥さらしじゃ」

“I think the young man was a better magician than you give him credit for,” he said. “And, you must admit, he worked long and tirelessly to help those who were taken in by the fake clerics--as I did.” He sighed.
“For which you got little thanks, no doubt,” the dwarf murmured.
“Very little,” Tanis said. “People want to believe in something--even if, deep inside, they know it is false.”

「おれはあの若者を、それほど出来の悪い魔術師だとは思わないよ。それに、かれはまやかしの僧侶にだまされている者を救うために、長いあいだ休みもせずに働いたことは認めないとな――おれと一緒に」＜ハーフ・エルフ＞はため息をついた。
「誰か感謝してくれたかね」＜ドワーフ＞がつぶやく。
「確かに」と、タニスは認めた。「人は何かを信じたいのだ――たとえ、心の奥底では偽りだとわかっていても」

Tas, without ever losing innocent, childlike expression on his face, reached into his fleecy vest, whipped out a dagger, and threw it--all in one motion.

“Besides,” he said, “that dagger was Flint’s!”

　タッスルは無邪気な子供っぽい表情をまったく崩すことなく、羊毛のベストの中に手を入れ、短剣を引き抜き、投げた――すべてがあっという間である。

「それに」と、かれは付け加えた。「あの短剣はフリントのだもん！」

　タニス、フリント、タッスルのファーストインプレッションを拾ってみました。二人はともかく、タッスルは「消えた月の竜」ですっかり老成した姿を読んだばかりだったので、この無邪気っぷりが懐かしいです。
