（危険人物はおれなんだ）タニスは気づいた。（おれがいなければ、キャラモンたちはまだ敵を騙しおおせるかもしれない。おれさえいなければ……）

「キャラモンに芝居をつづけるよう言ってくれ。おれが何をしようと、必ずおれを信じてくれ、と！すべてがそれにかかっている。おれが何をしようとだ。わかったか？」

Hurling himself forward, aware of the guards behind him, aware also of Caramon’s astonished face, Tanis threw himself toward the regal figure riding the blue dragon.
“Kitiara!”

　背後に迫る警備兵を目にしたタニスは、キャラモンの驚いた顔をも目にとめながら、だっと駆けだし、青竜にまたがった堂々たる人物に向かって身を投げ出した。
「キティアラ！」

The Highlord in the night-blue, dragon-scale armor turned upon hearing her name. Tanis could see her brown eyes widen in astonishment beneath the hideous dragonmask she wore. He could see the fiery eyes of the male blue dragon turn to gaze at him as well.

　夜藍色の竜鱗の鎧をつけたドラゴン卿は、自分の名前を呼ばれてふり返った。タニスには、彼女のとび色の瞳が、忌まわしい竜型面頬の下で驚きに見開かれるのが見えた。青い雄竜が、同じく炎のような眼でかれを睨みつける。

“Halt, Skie,” Kitiara said, placing a gloved hand commandingly on the dragon’s neck. Skie stopped obediently, his clawed feet slipping slightly on the cobblestones of the street. But the dragon’s eyes, as they glared at Tanis, were filled with jealously and hatred.

「止まれ、スカイア」キティアラは手袋をはめた手を騎竜の首に置いて命じた。スカイアはおとなしく従い、鉤爪の足が丸石敷きの街路でわずかに滑った。しかし、タニスを睨みつける竜の眼には、嫉妬と憎悪があふれていた。

　キティアラ様の関心（とそれ以上のもの）を得ているタニスへの、雄竜スカイアたんの嫉妬。おいしいですごちそうさまです。
　スカイアに限らず、フレア（夏の炎の竜、スティール）といい、レイザー（魂の戦争、メダン元帥）といい、青竜はみんな主のことが大好きですね。そんな彼らが愛しいです。


Stumbling to his feet, weak with relief, his head swimming from his struggles with the guards, Tanis made his way forward to stand beside her. As he drew nearer, he saw a flicker of amusement in Kitiara’s brown eyes. She was enjoying this; a new game with an old toy.

　タニスは安堵のあまり脱力し、警備兵とのもみあいでふらつく頭でよろよろと立ち上がると、彼女のかたわらに進み出た。近寄ってみると、キティアラのとび色の瞳にはおもしろがっているようなきらめきがあった。彼女はこの事態を楽しんでいるのだ。古いおもちゃでする新しい遊びのように。

His friends were safe now--at least safer than they were with him.

Turning away, he discovered Kitiara’s brown eyes regarding him with an odd mixture of cunning and undisguised admiration.

　ともかく友人たちはこれで安全になったのだ――少なくとも、かれと一緒にいるよりは。

　首を戻すと、キティアラのとび色の瞳が、狡猾さと、紛うことない賞賛の色を奇妙に混じりあわせてかれを見つめていた。
