「わたしは、子供のお伽話から出てきたのではありません。わたしは、火と闇と血の中を通ってきたのよ」

I’m trapped, Laurana realized. She would have to sit here the rest of the afternoon, smiling and waving and enduring speech praising her heroism when all she wanted was to lie down in some dark, cool place and sleep.

（わたしは罠にかかったんだわ）とローラナは悟った。彼女は午後の残りをずっとここにすわったまま、望みといえばどこか暗くて涼しい場所で横になって眠ることだけだというのに、実際には、微笑し、手を振り、英雄的行為を讃えて次々と述べられる演説を耐え忍ばねばならないのだ。

And it was all a lie, all a sham. If only they know the truth. What if she stood up and told them she was so frightened during the battles that she could remember details only in her nightmares? Told them that she was nothing but a game piece for the Knights? Told them that she was here only because she had run away from her home, a spoiled little girl chasing after a half-elven man who didn’t love her. What would they say?

　それはすべて嘘、すべて偽りなのである。もしかれらが真実を知ったなら？彼女が立ちあがって、自分は戦闘中あまりに怖かったので、細部は悪夢の中でしか思い出せない、と群衆に告げたなら？自分は騎士団にとってはゲームの駒でしかない、と告げたなら？自分がここにいるのは、家出したからにすぎない――片想いの＜ハーフ・エルフ＞の男を追いまわす、甘やかされた小娘だったのだ、と告げたなら？人々はなんと言うだろう？

「横になる」lieと「嘘」のlieを引っ掛けてるんですね、ここ。


“Tanis Half-Elven received a wound in the battle of Vingaard Keep.”

“I do this only because we are two women who understand each other.
“Kitiara”

「ハーフ・エルフのタニスがヴィンガールド城砦の戦いで負傷した」

「わたしがこの配慮をするのは、ひとえに、われら二人がお互いを理解しあっている女同士だからである。
キティアラ」

“surely you don’t think Tanis--“
“Besides Kitiara’s a Dragon Highlord now. What would Tanis be doing with her--“

「まさかタニスのこと、本気にしてないよね――」
「それに、キティアラは今じゃドラゴン卿じゃないか。タニスが彼女と一緒にいるわけが――」

Laurana turned her face away abruptly. Tasslehoff stopped and glanced at Flint, whose own face suddenly seemed to age.

　ローラナが不意に顔をそむけた。タッスルホッフは口ごもって、フリントを見た。フリントの顔は、急に年老いたようだった。

“So that’s it,” the dwarf said softly. “We saw you talking to Kitiara on the wall of the High Clerist’s Tower. You were discussing more than Sturm’s death, weren’t you?”

「そうか、そうだったのか」＜ドワーフ＞は低く言った。「＜大司教の塔＞でおまえさんはキティアラと話をしていたっけ。おまえさんたちが話していたのは、スタームの死のことだけじゃなかったんだな？」

“I saw him with her in the dream, just as I saw Sturm’s death. The dream’s coming true….”

「私は夢でタニスが彼女と一緒にいるのを見た。そして、夢で見たのと同じようにスタームは死んだ。夢は次々と実現しているのよ……」

“I haven’t died yet, like in the dream,”
“Besides, Laurana, Tanis wouldn’t--“

「ぼくだって、夢の中みたいに死んだりしていないよ」
「第一、あのタニスが、ありえない――」

Flint shot Tas a warning glance. The kender lapsed into silence. But Laurana had seen the glance and understood. Her lips tightened.

　フリントがすばやく警告の視線をタッスルに投げる。タッスルがはっと黙り込んだ。しかし、ローラナはその視線を見逃さず、意味をも読みとった。彼女の唇が固く引き結ばれる。

“Yes, he would. You both know it. He loves her.”
“I’m going. I’ll exchange Bakaris.”

「いいえ、ありえるわ。二人とも知っているでしょう。タニスは彼女を愛しているのよ」
「わたしは行くわ。バカリスを交換しましょう」

Rising to her feet, she regarded Flint coldly, as if he were someone she had just met. The dwarf was, in fact, strongly reminded of her as he had seen her Qualinesti, the evening she had run away from home to follow after Tanis in childish infatuation.

　彼女は立ち上がり、まるで初めて会った人に対するような冷ややかな目でフリントを見た。フリントは、実際、クォリネスティでの彼女をまざまざと思い出さされた。初恋にのぼせあがり、タニスを追って家出をした、あの夜の彼女である。

　二つの罠に翻弄されて、ローラランサラーサ姫、振り出しに戻る。まあ仕方ないですね。年端もいかぬ娘を担ぎ上げて利用しまくった方が悪いです、はい。
