Tanis sighed again. More problems. If the ancient gods had returned, what were they trying to do to them? See how heavy the burden could get before they collapsed beneath it? Did they find this amusing?

　タニスは再び嘆息した。また新たな問題か。いにしえの神々が本当に帰還されたというなら、いったい何をなさっているのか？われわれがどれほどの重荷に耐えられるか、限界まで試しておられるのではあるまいか？これをおもしろがってでもおられるのか？

Why not just give up? Why not just stay down here? Why bother searching for a way out? Stay down here and forget everything. Forget the dragons…forget Raistlin…forget Laurana…Kitiara….

　なぜおれたちはあっさり諦めないんだ？なぜあっさりここに留まらないんだ？なぜわざわざ脱出の道を探す？ここに留まって、すべてを忘れてしまえばいい。忘れるんだ、ドラゴンのことも……レイストリンのことも……ローラナのことも……キティアラ……。

They were all standing around him now. Waiting for him to tell  them what to do.

Still they watched him, with no dimming of the faith and trust in their eyes.

　みんながかれを取り巻いていた。何をすべきか、タニスが指示を出すのを待っていた。

　それでも一行は、かれへの信頼や忠実さの少しも衰えない瞳で見つめつづけた。

“Quit looking at me to lead you! I betrayed you! Don’t you realize that! It’s my fault. Everything’s my fault! Find someone else--“

「おれに指示を求めないでくれ！おれは君たちを裏切った身だぞ。それがわかっていないのか！おれが悪いんだぞ、みんなおれの責任なんだ！誰かほかの人に――」

“Shall I tell you a story, Half-Elf?”

「ひとつお話をしていいかしら、タニス？」

　きちんと確認していませんが、原文、ゴールドムーンがタニスを”Half-Elf”と呼ぶのはこれが唯一か、あっても珍しいことだったと思います。続く物語に登場するのが”Tanis”ではなく、無名の”One Man”であることの前振りなのでしょうか。


“A story of a woman and man, lost and alone and frightened. Bearing a great burden, they came to an inn. The woman sang a song, a blue crystal staff performed a miracle, a mob attacked them.”

「ある男女のお話です。二人は道に迷い、孤独で、怖い思いをしていました。そして、非常な重荷を携えて、ある宿屋へやってきました。女は歌を歌い、青い水晶の杖が奇跡を行い、暴徒が二人に襲いかかってきました」

“One man stood up. One man took charge. One man--a stranger--said, ‘We’ll go out through the kitchen.’”
“Do you remember, Tanis?”

「そのとき、ある人が立ち上がりました。ある人がかばってくれました。ある人が――それも、見ず知らずの人が――言ってくれました。『台所から逃げよう』」
「憶えてらっしゃいますか、タニス？」

“I remember,”

「憶えています」

“We’re waiting, Tanis,” she said simply.

Riverwind’s stern face was relaxed.

Caramon hesitated a moment, then--striding forward--embraced Tanis in one of his bearlike hugs.

「わたくしたちはあなたについていきます、タニス」彼女は言葉を飾ることなく言った。

　リヴァーウィンドのいかめしい顔がほころんでいる。

　キャラモンは一瞬躊躇したが、やがて――大きく踏み出すと――昔のように、熊並みの力でタニスを抱きしめた。

“Take us to Kalaman,”
“It’s where we were headed anyway.”

「カラマンへ連れて行ってください」
「いずれにせよ、そこがおれたちの目的地だったんだ」
