The sun was a huge, golden ball balanced upon the eastern horizon when the Perechon first sailed into the water that was red as the robes the mage wore, red as the blood that flecked his lips when he coughed.

　太陽が、金色の巨大な球となって東の水平線上に全身を現わすころ、いよいよペレチョン号は鮮紅色の海域へ乗り入れた。レイストリンのまとうローブのように赤く、かれが咳こむとき唇に滲む血のように赤い海域へ。

“Deck ho! Sail to the west!”
“A ship?”
“No,”
“A cloud, mebbe. But it go fast, very fast. Faster any cloud I ever see.”

「総員、甲板へ！西方に帆影！」
「船か？」
「いや」
「雲、かもしれねえ。だが、速え、ものすげえ速さだ。あんな速え雲、見たことねえぜ」

“mebbe”、流れからしてミノタウロス訛りの”maybe”なんでしょうか。


Now they all could make out the specks of darkness on the horizon, specks that grew larger even as they watched.

　今や、誰の目にも、水平線上に黒い斑点が見分けられた。斑点は、みるみる大きくなってくる。

Then Tanis felt a wrenching pain inside of him, as if he’d been pierced by a sword. The pain was so swift and so real he gasped, clutching hold of Caramon to keep from failure. The rest stared at him in concern, Caramon wrapping his big arm around his friend to support him.

　やがて、タニスは体の中に、まるで剣で貫かれたようなきりきりとした痛みを感じた。その痛みのあまりの急激さ、なまなましさに、かれは喘ぎ、くずおれそうになってキャラモンにつかまる。みんなは心配そうにかれを見つめ、キャラモンは太い腕をまわしてかれを支えた。

Tanis saw what flew toward them.
And he knew who led them.

　タニスは飛んでくるものの正体を悟ったのだ。
　そして、その先頭に立つのが誰なのかも。

Tanis shut his eyes, cursing himself. Of course, Kit would have had him watched! She didn’t trust him any more than she trusted the other men who shared her bed. What a damn egotistical fool he was! Believing he was something special to her, believing she loved him! She loved no one. She was incapable of loving--

　タニスは目をつむり、自分を呪った。当然キットは、おれを見張らせていたはずだ！彼女は、同衾する他の男たちと同様、おれのことも信じていなかったのだ。おれはなんと馬鹿なうぬぼれ屋なんだ！自分が彼女にとって特別な相手だと信じ、彼女がおれを愛していると信じこんでいたとは。彼女が誰かを愛するはずがない。愛せるはずなどないのだ――

　賢明で愚かなタニスちゃん、何もわかっていないのですね。見張らせていたから、彼女はあなたを愛していなかったと、どうして言えるのでしょう。あなたは人を愛しながら同時に疑ったことがないのですか？”She was incapable of loving”なんて、あんまりですよ。
