“And now,” Kitiara murmured sleeply, lying in Tanis’s arms. “Tell me about my little brothers. Are they with you? The last I saw them, you were wscaping from Tarsis with that elf woman.”
“That was you!” Tanis said, remembering the blue dragons.
“Of course!”

「ところで」キティアラはタニスの腕に抱かれたまま、眠たげにつぶやいた。「弟たちのことを話してちょうだい。あなたと一緒なの？この前あの子たちを見たのは、あなたたちがあのエルフ女と一緒にタルシスから逃げてゆくところだったわ」
「君だったのか！」タニスはあの時の青いドラゴン勢を思い出して叫んだ。
「もちろんのことじゃない」
How indeed? thought Tanis franctically.
“We…were captured in Silvanesti. One of the officers convinced me I was a fool to fight the D-Dark Queen.”
いったいどうやって？タニスは必死に頭を絞った。
「おれたち……おれたちはシルヴァネスティで捕われた。士、士官の一人が、＜暗黒の女王＞と闘うなど愚か者のすることだ、と説得してくれた」
“We--we separated,” Tanis said weakly.
“A pity,” Kit said with a sigh. “I’d like to see them again. Caramon must be a giant by now. And Raistlin--I hear he is quite a skilled mage. Still wearing the Red Robes?”
「お――おれたちは別れたんだ」タニスはしどろもどろで言った。
「惜しいこと」キットはため息をついた。「もう一度、二人に会いたいものだわ。キャラモンは今では巨人になってるはずよね。それからレイストリン――あの子はすっかり腕のいい魔法使いになったそうね。まだ赤いローブを着てる？」
“I--I guess,” Tanis muttered. “I haven’t seen him--“
“That won’t last long,” Kit said complacently. “He’s like me. Raist always craved power…”
「ど――どうかな」タニスはもごもごと言った。「あれ以来会っていないから――」「いずれすぐに会えるわよ」キットは一人悦に入って言った。「あの子はわたしと似ているもの。レイストはいつでも力に焦がれていた……」

「レイスト」って呼ぶのはキャラモンだけかと思ってたらキティアラもだったんですね。盲点。
“What about you?”
“Searching for the Green Gemstone Man, of course.”
“That’s where I’ve seen him before!”
「君のほうはどうなんだ？」
「当然、＜緑宝石の男＞の捜索じゃない」
「それで、あの男に見覚えがあったんだ！」
“What’s he got that’s so essential to--uh--our side winning this war?”
“Who knows?” Shrugging her slender shoulders, Kit lay back in Tanis’s arms. “You’re shivering. Here, this will warm you.” She kissed his neck, running her hands over his body.
「なぜあんな男が――そのう――われわれがこの戦争で勝利を収めるのにそれほど不可欠なんだ？」
「知るものですか」ほっそりした肩をすくめると、キットは再びタニスの腕の中に横たわった。「震えてるじゃないの。ほら、温めてあげる」彼女はタニスの首に口づけをし、体に手を這わせた。
“We were just told the most important thing we could do to end this war in one swift stroke is to find this man.”
Tanis swallowed, feeling himself warming to her touch.
「わたしたちが聞いているのは、この戦争を一撃で終わらせるには、その男を探し出すのが最重要だ、ということだけ」
タニスは唾を飲んだ。彼女に触れられて、また熱くなってくるのがわかる。
Her words echoed in his mind. The two of them, together, forever. Ending the war. Ruling Krynn.
彼女の言葉がタニスの頭の中でこだました。キティアラと一緒に、二人で、いつまでも。戦を終わらせ、クリンを支配する……。
No, he thought, feeling his throat constrict. This is madness! Insanity! My people, my friends….Yet, haven’t I done enough? What do I owe any of them, humans or elves?
Kitiara…so beautiful, so desirable…
いや、とタニスは思った。咽が詰まりそうだった。これは狂気の沙汰だ！狂ってる！仲間や友人はどうなる……。だが、もうじゅうぶん力は尽くしたのではないか？エルフ族にせよ人間にせよ、おれがかれらに何の借りがある？
キティアラ……これほど美しく、これほど好もしく……。
“No!” Tanis said harshly, then, “No,” he said more gently. Reaching out his hand, he pulled her back near him. “Tomorrow will do. If it was him, he isn’t going anywhere. I know….”
「だめだ！」タニスは荒々しく言ったが、すぐにもっと優しく「いや」と言った。手をのばして、彼女の背中を引き寄せる。「明日でもいい。もしかれがその男なら、どこへも行きはしない。わかってるんだ……」
Kitiara smiled and, with a sigh, lay back down. Tanis, bending over her, kissed her passionately. Far away, he could hear the waves of the Blood Sea of Istar crashing on the shore.
キティアラは微笑むと、ため息をもらしながら再び上体を落とした。タニスがその上にかぶさり、情熱的に口づけを浴びせる。はるか遠くで、＜イスタルの鮮血海＞の波が岸に砕ける音が聞こえていた。

砕けているのは波ばかりではなく、イスタルの都と、そして。
