Tasslehoff’s knife clattered to the floor. The kender sagged back against the railing. For the first, last, and only time in his life, Tasslehoff Burrfoot was struck speechless.

　タッスルホッフのナイフが、からんと床に落ちた。かれは、くたりと手すりによりかかった。生まれて以来、最初にして最後、ただ一度だけ、タッスルホッフ・バーフットは言うべき言葉を失った。

“Ah, poor boy. Afflicted, eh? Speech impediment. Sad, sad. Here--“

「そうか、かわいそうに。病気なんじゃな？言語障害か。気の毒なことだ、うむ。そうじゃ――」

“Fizban!”
“Where?” The old man whirled around. Raising his staff, he peered fearfully into the darkness. Then something seemed to occur to him. Turning back around, he asked Tas in a loud whisper, “I say, are you sure you saw this Fizban? Isn’t he dead?”

「フィズバン！」
「どこに？」老人はくるりとふり返った。杖を差し上げて、こわごわ暗がりをうかがう。しかし、何かを思い出したらしく、かれは向き直って、タッスルに大きな声でささやいた。「おい、本当にそのフィズバンを見たのか？やつは死んだのじゃなかったのか？」

“I--I’m not sure, b-but I think you’re Fizban.”

「か、確信はないけど、あ、あんたがフィズバンだと思うよ」

His shoulders sagged. “So I’m dead. Done for. Bought the farm. Kicked the bucket.” He staggered to a bench and plopped down. “Was it a nice funeral?” he asked. “Did lots of people come? Was the twenty-one gun salute?”

　かれの肩ががっくり落ちた。「では、わしは死んだのか。やられたな。墓場行きか。おだぶつだな」かれはとぼとぼとベンチへ行って、ぐったり座りこんだ。「よい葬式だったか？人はたくさん来たか？二十一発の礼砲はあったか？」

“I never in my life splattered!”

Tas’s eyes filled with tears as he remembered his heartbroken search for the old man’s body.

“So you left me buried under a mound of chicken feathers?”

“But, come to think of it, I haven’t been able to eat a chicken since.”

「わしは生まれてこのかた、ぐちゃりとつぶれた覚えなどないわ！」

　タッスルは、傷心の中で老人の遺体を探しまわったことを思い出して、涙をいっぱいに浮かべた。

「それでわしを、鶏の羽毛の山の下に埋めたまま置き去りにしたというわけか？」
「しかし、言われてみれば、わしはあれ以来、鶏肉が食えんようになっておる」

　三回前で「意地悪」言ってごめんなさい、フィズバン。素敵なボケっぷりに磨きがかかって再登場。

　いつ語ろうか迷ってたんですが、ここでやっちゃいます。不敵にも
「『ドラゴンランス』の残念な点について」
　ただ一点だけです。

　悪の女神、＜暗黒の女王＞タキシスというキャラクタ―に、魅力がなさすぎるんですよ。狡猾ではあっても愚かな、権力欲の亡者にしか見えない。薄いんですよラスボスにしては！

　対する光の神はこれだけ味のあるキャラなのに。同じダークサイドでも、レイストリンを筆頭に、キティアラ、ダラマール、ソス卿、スティール、メダン元帥と魅力的な人物はいくらでもいるのに。

「ロマンシングサガ（リメイク版）ミンストレルソング」の大詰めで、グレイが邪神サルーインに言っていた、こんな台詞が思い出されます。

「神にしてはずいぶんと程度の低い恨み言を言うものだな。
邪神というからにはもっと邪悪な哲学で
俺を魅了してもらいたいものだ」

The Bridge of Passage was a long, smooth arch of pure white marble. Along its sides--carved in vivid relief--long columns of knights walked symbolically across the bubbling streams.

＜関門橋＞は、純白の大理石でできた、長く滑らかなアーチだった。端の両側には浮き彫りの騎士の列が連なり、沸き立つ流れを渡る姿を模してある。

Silvara spoke strange wards, and the moonlight poured down upon her, bathing her in its light. The moon’s lights shone upon the bubbling waters, making them come alive, dancing with silver. It shone upon the marble bridge, giving life to the knights who spent eternity crossing the stream.

　シルヴァラが不思議な呪文を唱えると、月光が彼女の上に降り注ぎ、包みこんだ。月光は泡立つ水面にも注ぎかけ、生命を吹き込み、銀色に躍らせた。さらに月光は大理石の橋にも注ぎ、永遠に流れを渡りつづけてきた騎士たちに生命を与えた。

But it was not these beautiful sights that caused the companions to clasp each other with shaking hands or to hold each other closely. The moon’s light on the water did not cause Flint to repeat the name of Reorx in the most reverent prayer he ever uttered, or cause Laurana to lean her head against her brother’s shoulder, her eyes dimmed with sudden tears, or cause Gilthanas to hold her tightly, overwhelmed by a feeling of fear and awe and reverence.

　しかし、一行が震える手を握り合い、しっかりと抱き合ったのは、この美しい光景のせいではなかった。フリントが今までにないほど敬虔にレオルクスの名をくり返し唱えたのも、ローラナが兄の肩に頭をもたせかけて、不意に涙で眼を曇らせたのも、ギルサナスが妹を抱き締めて恐怖と畏怖と崇拝の念に圧倒されたのも、流れの面に射す月光のせいではなかった。

Soaring high above them, so tall its head might have torn a moon from the sky, was the figure of a dragon, carved out of a mountain of rock, shining silver in the moonlight.

　かれらの眼前に高く――あまりの高さに、その頭で空から月を引きおろしかねないほど――そびえて、ドラゴンの像があった。山の岩肌に刻まれたそのドラゴンは、月光を浴びて銀色に輝いていた。

Listen to your feelings, Raistlin had told her. That was all very well, but first she had to understand her feelings! Hadn’t her love for Tanis taught her anything?

　自分の感情に耳を傾けなさい、とレイストリンは言った。それはおおいに結構だが、彼女はその前に、自分の感情を理解しなければならなかった。タニスへの愛は、彼女に何も教えてくれなかったのか？

Gilthanas told himself. By the gods, his values were getting as muddled as Laurana’s!

　ギルサナスは自答した。神々にかけて、かれの価値観は、ローラナのそれのように混乱しつつあった！

But he had never thought he would fall in love with a Wilder elf.

　野生エルフと恋に落ちようとは、まったくの予想外だった。

And then, the clouds parted. Solinari, the silver moon, though only half-full, burned in the night sky with a cold brilliance. The water in the pool turned to molten silver. Silvara rose up out of the pool. The silver water glistened on her skin, gleamed in her hair, ran in shining rivulets down her body that was painted in silver moonlight. Her beauty struck Gilthanas’s heart with such intense pain that he gasped.

　そのとき、雲が切れた。銀の月ソリナリが、まだ十二夜の月だったが、夜空に冷たい輝きを放った。滝壺の水が、溶けた銀になった。シルヴァラが水から上がった。銀の水が、彼女の肌で輝き、銀色の髪できらめき、銀の月光で描いたようなその体をきらきらと流れ落ちる。あまりの美しさに、ギルサナスは胸がきりきりと痛んで、思わず喘ぎ声をもらした。

　クォリネスティ第二王子ギルサナス（年齢不詳、102歳のタニスを弟呼ばわりしているのでそれ以上）が覗きの容疑で騎士デレク・クラウンガードに任意同行を求められました。騎士の取り調べに対し王子は
”what am I doing here?”「ぼくはここで何をしているんだろう？」
”I don’t understand what it is that I must do.”「自分でも何をしているのかわからなくて、ただ……」
　などと供述しています。被害者S嬢はL姫のインタビューに対し
”Don’t ask me!”「どうか訊かないで！」
　と泣き崩れたということです（大嘘）


Too late the wild doe realized she was trapped. Not by the man’s arms, she could easily have broken free of his embrace. It was her own love for this man that had ensnared her. That his love for her was deep and tender sealed their fate. He was trapped as well.

　野生の牝鹿は、罠にかかったことを悟った。かれの腕にではない――そんなものは、たやすくふりほどける。彼女を虜にしたのは、かれに対する彼女自身の愛情だった。そして、かれが深く彼女を愛していることが、二人の運命を定めた。かれもまた罠に落ちたのだ。

“What legend?” Gilthanas asked. The elflord sat facing Silvara, who was in the prow of the boat. His padding was not much better than Flint’s, Gilthanas being much more interested in Silvara’s face than hid work.

「どんな伝説だい？」ギルサナスが訊いた。かれは船首のシルヴァラと向かいあって座っていたため、漕ぎ手としてはフリント並みにしか役立っていなかった。手を動かすことよりも、シルヴァラの顔に気を取られていたからである。

“because the Stag led Huma, after trial and dangers, to a quiet grove, here, in the land of Ergoth. In the grove he met a woman, beautiful and virtuous, who eased his pain. Huma fell in love with her and she with him. But she refused his pledges of love for many months. Finally, unable to deny the burning fire within her, the woman returned Huma’s love. Their happiness was like the silver moonlight in a night of terrible darkness.”

「白鹿が、あまたの試練と苦難の後にヒューマを導いた静けき林とは、ここエルゴスの地にあったのです。その林で、ヒューマは一人の娘に出会いました。美しく、優しく、かれの痛みを和らげてくれる娘に。ヒューマは娘に恋をしました。そして、娘もヒューマに。娘は、幾月ものあいだ、かれの愛の誓いを拒みました。けれどもついに、娘は自分の胸に燃える恋心を否定できなくなって、ヒューマの愛に応えました。二人の幸福は、恐ろしい闇夜に射した銀の月光のようでした」

“Go on,” Gilthanas urged. The elflord had given up all pretext of paddling and sat still, enchanted by Silvara’s beautiful eyes, her musical voice.

「それから？」エルフの若君は、今では漕いでいるふりさえやめて、じっと座ったまま、シルヴァラの美しい瞳と、歌うような声にうっとりと魅せられていた。

“Paladine granted her wish, with a terrible condition. He showed them both the future. If she remained a dragon, she and Huma would be given the Dragonlance and the power to defeat the evil dragons. If she became mortal, she and Huma would live together as man and wife, but the evil dragons would remain in the land forever.”

「パラダインは彼女の願いを聞き入れました――恐ろしい条件をつけて。パラダインは二人に未来を示したのです。彼女がドラゴンのままでいれば、二人は邪竜たちを滅ぼす力とドラゴンランスを授けられ、彼女が人間となれば、二人は夫婦としてともに暮らせるけれども、邪竜は永遠に地上に留まる、と」

“Huma vowed he would give up everything--his knighthood, hos honor--to remain with her. But she saw the light die in his eyes as he spoke, and weeping, she knew the answer she must give.”

「ヒューマは、彼女といられるのならばすべてを――騎士の位も、名誉も――投げうってもよいと誓いました。でも娘は、そう言うかれの眼の光が失せるのを見て、涙ながらに自分のとるべき答えを知りました」

　フィズバンの意地悪ーーー！！！
　この話をここで締めくくるのは悲しすぎるので、次のシーンを先取りしましょう。


In this temple, however, she felt only sorrow and loss, tempered by the knowledge of a great victory--a battle won at terrible cost, but bringing with it eternal peace and sweet restfulness.

　しかしこの神殿に漂うのは、失われたものへの悲哀感だけで、それを大いなる勝利の余韻がそっと慰撫していた。勝利にはらったつらい犠牲が、また永遠の平和と甘美な安らぎをもたらしたというような――

「しっ！」鍛冶屋が命じる。「質問はあとだ。ローラナ姫の指示で助けにきた。陣営の向こうの森で、姫と落ち合う手筈だ。急げ！」

“Well, master thief, I see someone caught you at last.”
“I’m not a thief!”

「やあ、盗みの名人もついに捕まったな」
「ぼくは盗みなんかするもんか！」タッスルが憤慨する。

The smith chuckled. Taking hold of a chain in his hands, he gave a sudden heave and it split apart. Tasslehoff, however, did not even notice. He was staring at the smith’s arms.

　テロスがくすくす笑った。そして鎖を両手でつかむと、ぐいと引っ張る。鎖が真っぷたつに切れた。しかし、タッスルホッフはそれに気づきもせず、鍛冶屋の腕に見入っていた。

“Theros,” Tas said in a strangled voice. “Your arm--“

「テロス」タッスルはくぐもった声で言った。「あんたの腕――」

“Do you remember what the pig of a Fewmaster told me?” Theros asked in his rich, deep voice, whispering softly. “’The only way you’ll get a new arm, smith, is to forge it yourself!’ Well, I did just that!”

「あの豚野郎の長官がなんて言ったか、憶えてるか？」テロスは豊かな深い声で、そっとささやいた。「『新しい腕が欲しければ、きさまが自分で鍛えるしかないな』ってね。そうさ、おれはそのとおりにしたんだ！」

　豊かな深いバリトン声の素敵ダンディ、銀の腕なるテロス・アイアンフェルド。レイストリンは別格として、本来こういう人がタイプなんです。もっと登場して〜。

Laurana closed her eyes for a moment. She laid her head down wearily on her knees. Tanis, she thought, where are you? What should I do? Why is it up to me? I didn’t want this.

　ローラナは目を閉じて、しばらくぐったりと頭を抱え込んでいた。タニス、どこにいるの、と彼女は思った。わたしはどうすればいいの？なぜ、わたしなんかが決めなくてはならないの？荷が重すぎるわ。

And then, as she sat there, Laurana remembered seeing weariness and sorrow on Tanis’s face that mirrored her own. Maybe he asked himself these same things. All the times I thought he was so strong, perhaps he really felt as lost and frightened as I do.

　しかし、そうしているうちにローラナは、タニスもよく疲労と悲哀の浮かんだ顔をしていたのを思い出した。今の彼女の顔もそうだろう。きっとかれは、このようなことを何度も自問していたのだ。わたしが、タニスはなんて強い人かしらと思っていた時、あの人は胸の中ではいつも、今のわたしのように、途方に暮れて怯えていたのかもしれない。

Certainly he felt abandoned by his people. And we depended on him, whether he wanted us to or not. But he accepted it. He did what he believed was right.
And so must I.

　少なくとも、かれは親兄弟から見捨てられた思いに加え、自分の意思とは関係なく仲間から頼られていた。けれどもかれは、それを受け入れた。かれは、正しいと信ずる通りに行動したのだ。
　だったら、わたしもそうしなければ。

　ローラランサラーサ姫、覚醒。これまであまり取り上げてきませんでしたが、嫌いじゃないんですよローラナ。シリーズを通じて最も美しく聡明で魅力的な女性は、「魂の戦争」におけるローラナだと思ってます。成長に時間がかかるのは、エルフだから仕方ないのです。

“All we have are children’s stories, as Raistlin would say.” Sturm put his hand to his face, covering his eyes, and gave a deep, shuddering sigh.

「あるのは、子供のお伽噺ばかり――レイストリンなら、きっとそう言うでしょう」スタームは手で眼を覆い、深く、わななくようなため息をついた。

“Do you know,” he said softly, “I never thought I’d say it, but I miss Raistlin. I miss all of them. I feel as if part of me’s been cut off, and that’s how I felt in Solamnia. That’s why I came back, instead of waiting and completing the tests for my knighthood. These people--my friends--were doing more to combat evil in the world than all the Knights lined up in a row.”

「不思議に思われるかもしれませんが」と、かれは低く言った。「自分でも信じられないことに、わたしはレイストリンがいなくて淋しいのです。みんなが恋しいのです。まるで自分の一部が切り取られたようです。ソラムニアにいたときもそう感じました。それでわたしは、騎士の叙爵審問が終わるのも待たずに、帰ってきてしまったわけです。わたしの友人たちのほうが、世の悪と戦うことにかけては、全騎士団が勢ぞろいしたよりも大きな働きをしていました」

“Even Raistlin, in some way I can’t understand. He could tell us what all this means.” He jerked his thumb back at the iceencased knight. “At least he would believe in it. If he were here. If Tanis were here--“
“Yes,” Laurana said quietly. “If Tanis were here--“

「わたしには理解できない方法であれ、レイストリンですらそうです。かれなら、これがすべてどういう意味かを説明してくれるでしょうに」かれは親指で、氷漬けの騎士を示した。「少なくとも、かれなら真剣に考えるでしょう。かれがここにいれば。それにもしタニスがここにいれば――」
「そうね。タニスがここにいてくれたら――」

　仮定法過去って表現、好きです。実現しなかった現在とは、もう戻らない過去のようなものなのでしょうか。

　ところでスターム、「レイストリン」って三回言いました。そんなに淋しいですか。でも仮にもし会えたら悪態つくんでしょうね。素直じゃないったら。

“Why ask?” Raistlin said wearily. “Would you kill me, Tanis? Now?”
“I don’t know,” Tanis said softly, thnking of Caramon’s dying words. “Perhaps.”

「教えてくれ、魔法使い。われわれが見た未来とやらは、変えられないのか？」
「なぜ訊くのです？」レイストリンはぐったりして言った。「ぼくを殺したいならどうぞ、タニス。今すぐ」
「わからない」タニスは低くつぶやきながら、キャラモンの臨終の言葉を思い出していた。「わからない」

Raistlin smiled bitterly. “Save your energy,” he said. “The future changes as we stand here, else we are the game pieces of the gods, not their heirs, as we have been promised.”

　レイストリンは苦笑した。「では力をためておいていてください。未来はぼくらがここに立っている間にも変化しています。でなければ、ぼくたちは神々のゲームの駒でしかありません。実際には神々の後継者として約束されたはずですが」

“Things can never again be the same between us, can they?” the half-elf asked quietly.
Raistlin looked at him for a moment, and Tanis saw a brief flicker of regret in the young mage’s eyes, a longing for trust and friendship and a return to the days of youth.
“No,” Raistlin whispered. “But such was the price I paid.”

「もう昔のようにはいかないんだな？」＜ハーフ・エルフ＞は静かに訊いた。
　レイストリンはつかの間かれを見つめた。若い魔法使いの眼に、後悔の色がちらりと浮かんだ。信頼と友情に満ちた青春時代への憧憬。
「ええ」レイストリンはささやいた。「でも、それがぼくの払った犠牲です」

　このシーンを思うとき、英雄伝2巻収録の「炉辺のネコと冬のみそさざい」を思い出します。「信頼と友情に満ちた青春時代」とは、例えばこんなエピソードだったのだろうなと。


“Would he be happy, Tanis?
And could I be happy, knowing that I must watch him age and die while I  am still in my youth?”

「かれは幸せになれるかしら、タニス？
わたくしは幸せでいられるかしら――かれが年老いて死んでゆくのを、若いままで見守っていなければならないとわかっていて――？」

“I asked myself these same questions, Alhana,” Tanis said, thinking with pain of the decision he had reached concerning Kitiara. “If we deny love that is given to us, if we refuse to give love because we fear the pain of loss, then our lives will be empty, our loss greater.”

「おれも同じことを自問しました、アルハナ」タニスはキティアラについて下した結論を思いながら、胸を痛めた。「与えられた愛を否定したり、失うのが怖いからと言って愛を与えるのを拒んだりしたら、われわれの生は虚しくなり、失うものはいっそう大きくなってしまいます」

But he could not help wondering, as he did, that if he was so damn wise, why was his life in such a mess?

　しかし、かれはまたもや思い悩まずにはいられなかった。偉そうなことが言えるのなら、なぜおれの人生はこうまでうまくゆかないんだ？

Tanis struggled helplessly as an undead elf, his face twisted grotesquely, reaised a spear to drive it through Tanis’s body. Suddenly the elf’s eyes widened, the spear fell from nerveless fingers as a sword punctured its transparent body.

Tanis looked up to see who had saved his life. It was a strange warrior, strange--yet familiar. The warrior removed his helm, and Tanis stared into bright brown eyes!
“Kitiara!”

　タニスは必死にもがいた。凄惨な形相のエルフの悪霊が、かれめがけて槍をふりあげる。と、やにわにエルフが目を剥き、手の槍がぽとりと落ちた。透けた体に剣が突き刺さっている。

　タニスは誰が命を救ってくれたのかと見上げた。見慣れない戦士だった。見慣れない――が、どこか見覚えがある。戦士は兜を脱いだ。中から現われた明るい褐色の瞳！
「キティアラ！」

“No!” he shouted in Que-shu. “Don’t you recognize me? I--“
The Que-shu warriors answered only with their bowstrings. Riverwind felt shaft after feathered shaft sink into his body.
“You brought the blue crystal staff among us!” they cried. “Your fault! The destruction of our village was your fault!”
“I didn’t mean to,” he whispered as he slumped to the ground.

「やめろ！」かれはケ=シュ語で叫んだ。
「おれがわからないのか？おれは――」
　ケ=シュの戦士はただ弓弦を放って返事とした。リヴァーウィンドの体に次々と羽根のついた矢が埋め込まれた。
「おまえが青水晶の杖を部族に持ち込んだ！」男たちは叫んだ。「おまえのせいだ！村の滅亡はおまえのせいだ！」
「そんなつもりではなかった」かれはささやきながら地面にくずおれた。

Blinded by tears, panic-stricken at the sight of the draconians, who sprang back into battle full-grown from their own dead bodies, Tika lost control. In her fear, she stabbed wildly at anything that moved.
Only when she looked up and saw Raistlin standing before her in his black robes did she come into her senses. The mage said nothing, he simply pointed downward. Flint lay dead at her feet, pierced by her own sword.

　ティカは涙で目がかすみ、死んだドラコニアンがすぐに生き返って襲ってくるのを見て動顛し、自制心を失った。恐怖に駆られた彼女は、動くものすべてを盲滅法に突き刺した。
　目の前に黒いローブ姿のレイストリンが立っているのに気づいて、ようやく彼女はわれに返った。魔法使いは何も言わず、ただ下を指差した。フリントがティカの足元で、ティカの剣に貫かれてこときれていた。

“Why don’t you answer? Heal him!” Goldmoon cried to the gods. And then she knew. “No!” she screamed. “Punish me! I am the one who has doubted. I am the one who has questioned! I saw Tarsis destroyed, children dying in agony! How could you allow that?”

「なぜ応えてくださらないのです？かれを癒してください！」ゴールドムーンは神々に叫んだ。そうして、彼女は悟った。「いやです！罰するなら、わたくしを！疑いを抱いているのはわたくしです。わたくしが疑問を持っているのです！タルシスは滅ぼされ、子供たちは苦しみながら死にました！なぜあのようなことをお許しになられたのです？」

“I’ve got to rest, Raist,” he gasped. “Put me down.”
“Certainly, my brother,” Raistlin said gently. He helped Caramon lean against the pearl wall of the Tower, then regarded his brother with cool, glittering eyes.
“Farewell, Caramon”

「おれは休まなきゃならん、レイスト」かれは喘いだ。「降ろしてくれ」
「いいとも、兄さん」レイストリンは優しく言った。かれは双子の兄を塔の真珠の壁によりかからせると、ひやりと光る眼でじっと兄を眺めた。
「さよなら、キャラモン」

“Perhaps, but you see, my brother, I no longer need you.”

“How does it feel to be weak and afraid, my brother?”

「でもわかるだろう、兄さん、ぼくにはもう兄さんが必要ないんだ」
「弱くて恐れているってどんな気持ちかな、兄さん？」

“Protect Raistlin, Tanis--since I won’t be there now.”

“He left you here, to die!”

“No, you’re wrong, Tanis. I sent him away….”

「レイストリンを守ってくれ、タニス――おれはもうついて行ってやれんから」
「あいつは君を置き去りにしたんだぞ、見殺しにして！」
「いや、それは違う、タニス。おれが行かせたんだ……」

“Poor Caramon,”
“Somehow I always guessed it would end this way.”
“So my little Raistlin has become truly powerful,”

「かわいそうなキャラモン。なんだかこんなふうになりそうな気が、いつもしていたのよ」
「では、わたしの小さなレイストリンがほんとうに強力になったのだわ」

Desperately he repeated the code of the knights, My Honor Is My Life, but the words sounded hollow and meaningless in his ears. He was not a knight. What did the Code mean to him? He had been living a lie! Sturm’s sword arm wavered, then dropped; his sword fell from his hand and he sank to his knees, shivering and weeping like a child, hiding his head from the terror before him.

　スタームは必死に騎士の掟をくり返した。『わが名誉はわが命』――しかしその言葉は、かれの耳には虚ろで無意味に聞こえた。実は、かれは騎士ではないのだ。かれにとって掟がなんの意味を持とう？かれは偽りをおし通してきたのだ！スタームの右腕は震え、そしてだらりと垂れた。剣が手からこぼれ、がっくりと膝をついたかれは、子供のようにおいおい泣きじゃくって、眼前の恐怖から自分の頭を隠した。

“No! Laurana!” Tanis shouted. Starting to go to her, he heard Kitiara cry out again. He stopped, turning. Clutching at his head, he stood irresolute and helpless, forced to watch as Kitiara fell beneath the enemy.

「嘘だ！ローラナ！」タニスが駆け寄ろうとした時、再びキティアラの呼び声が聞こえた。ふり返ったかれは頭を抱えた。どちらへも行けず呆然と立ちつくすかれの前で、キティアラが敵の足下に倒れていった。

Suddenly Tanis became acutely conscious of the ring pressing into his palm: the metal was cool, its edge rough. He could feel the golden twisted ivy leaves bite into his flesh.
Tanis closed his hand, squeezing the ring. The gold bit into his flesh, bit deeply. Pain…real pain…
I am dreaming!

　突然、タニスは、指輪が手のひらに食い込んでいるのを鋭く意識した。金属が冷たく、浮き彫りの縁が荒い。蔦の葉をかたどった黄金が肉に突き刺さる……。
　タニスは手に力をこめ、ぎりぎりと指輪を握った。金が肉に刺さる……深々と、痛み……現実の痛み……。
　おれは夢を見ているんだ！

The half-elf staggered to his feet and walked shakily toward Raistlin. As he drew nearer, he could see blood on the mage’s lips. The blood gleamed red in Lunitari’s light--as red as the robes that covered Raistlin’s frail, shivering body.
The dream.

＜ハーフ・エルフ＞はぐらりと立ち上がり、よろめきながらレイストリンのほうへ行った。魔法使いの唇に血がにじんでいるのが見えた。ルニタリの光に照らされた赤い血――レイストリンの華奢な、震える体を覆っているローブと同じ、赤。

　シルヴァネスティの悪夢の中でも、とりわけ痛いと感じたシーン、後の伏線として重要なシーンを並べてみました。

　原書読み＆このブログと並行して、久しぶりに二次創作（もちろん竜槍です）を書きはじめております。事件の成り行きはそのままに、登場人物の設定を少々いじって、この時誰が何を思って行動していたか、を妄想してるんですが、どうあがいても原作通りのハッピーエンドになりそうにありません。もっと研究せねば。いや、いっそ居直ってバッドエンドにしちゃおうかなあ。

“Then prepare,” Raistlin whispered softly, and he turned away and began to walk slowly along the sandy beach after his brother.

「力を貸してください」魔法使いは厳しく言った。「前のように」
「だめだ、レイスト！」
「取引ならすんだはずです。え？まだ足りない？」
「お望みのものは？」

For long moment, the mage listened, absorbing. Caramon, watching him with loving anxiety, saw his brother’s thin metalic-tinged face grow deathly pale. Raistlin closed his eyes, swallowing as though drinking his bitter herbal brew. Finally he bowed his head.
“I accept.”

　長いあいだ、魔法使いは一心に耳を傾けていた。はらはらしながら見守っていたキャラモンは、弟の金属的な細い顔から血の気が消え、蒼白になるのを見た。レイストリンは目を閉じて、苦い煎じ薬でも飲むように唾を飲み込んだ。ついにかれは頭を下げた。
「仰せのままに」

Caramon cried out in horror as he saw Raistlin’s robes, the red robes that marked his neutrality in the world, begin to deepen to crimson, then darken to a blood red, and then darken more--to black.
“I accept this,” Raistlin repeated more calmly, “with the understanding that the future can be changed.”

　キャラモンが恐怖の叫びをあげた。レイストリンのローブが、世に中立を示す赤いローブが深紅に染まり、そして血のような暗褐色に変わり、さらに濃さを増していった――漆黒へと。
「これは甘受しましょう」レイストリンは平静さを加えて言った。「未来を変えることは可能でしょうから」

“We cannot be taken alive,” Raistlin whispered.

　リヴァーウィンドはかぶりを振った。「数時間、だろうな」短く言う。

「生け捕りにされるわけにはいかないな」レイストリンがささやいた。

“I have herbs, A tiny bit in a glass of wine. Very quick, painless.”

「薬草を持っています。ワインにほんの少し入れるだけ。あっと言う間で、苦痛もありません」

“What about Laurana?” Caramon asked. “You know elves. She won’t--“
“Leave it to me,” Raistlin repeated softly.

「ローラナはどうする？」とキャラモン。「エルフ族の生命観は知っているだろう。彼女は絶対に――」
「ぼくに任せてくれ」レイストリンは静かにくり返した。

“I will die fighting,” Caramon said to Raistlin, trying to speak in a matter-of-fact tone. After the first few words, though, the big warrior’s voice broke. “Promise me, Raist, you’ll take this stuff if I’m…not there….”

「おれは闘いながら死ぬぞ」キャラモンは平然と聞こえるように努めながらレイストリンに言った。しかし、すぐに大男の戦士の声は乱れた。「約束してくれ、レイスト、おれが……おれがいなければ、おまえも、その薬を飲むって……」

“There will be no need, “ Raistlin said simply. “I have not the strength to survive a battle of this magnitude. I will die within my magic.”

「その必要はないよ」レイストリンはさらりと言った。「ぼくの体はこんな大戦闘には耐えられない。呪文をかけつくしただけでじゅうぶん死ぬさ」

　Twitterで原文テロを試みた時、取り上げずにはいられなかった言葉です。本当、あの日のドラゴンランスbotさんのセレクトは神がかってました。

　この後、ローラナに「仮死状態になるだけだから」と微笑まで添えて説明するレイストリン、優しいじゃないですか。でも”Welcome, Tanis, You have come in time to die with us.”で台無しですけど。

　ミュララーサ。エルフたちは彼女をそう呼んだ――夜の王女。

The knight’s first thought was to give thanks to Paladine that he was already on his knees. His second was that deathwould be a paltry price to pay to serve her, and his third that he must say something, but he seemed to have forgotten the words of any known language.

　騎士はまず第一に、既にひざまずいていたことをパラダインに感謝した。次いで、この姫に仕えるためならば死も些細な犠牲であると思い、第三に、何か言わなければ、と思ったが、言葉というものをすっかり忘れてしまったようだった。

Alhana looked up into Sturm’s grieved face and saw etched there pride, nobility, strict inflexible discipline, constant striving for perfection--perfection unattainable. And thus the deep sorrow in his eyes.

　アルハナは、スタームの嘆きに満ちた顔を見上げた。そこには誇り、高潔さ、確固とした厳格な修練、そして完璧――常に高みにある完璧――を目指すたゆまぬ努力が刻まれていた。その一方で、眼には深い悲しみが。

“Do not concern yourself.” Sturm’s voice echoed her coldness. “And do not thank me. I did nothing more than my Code required of me. Farewell,”

Alhana dropped her head, unable to meet his gaze, and took his hand in hers. Then she laid the jewel in his palm and closed his fingers over it.
“Keep this,” she said softly. “When you look at it, think of Alhana Starbreeze and know that, somewhere, she thinks of you.”

　アルハナはかれの視線に耐えきれずに頭を垂れ、その手を両手で包んだ。そして、宝石をかれの手のひらに置いて握らせた。
「お持ちになっていてください」
「これをご覧になるたびに、アルハナ・スターブリーズを思い出し、そして彼女もどこかであなたを思っていることをご承知ください」

“Forgive me, Sturm,” she whispered to herself. Then she stopped. “No, do not forgive me,” she said harshly. “Thank me.”

「許してください、スターム」彼女は自分にささやいた。が、思い直した。「いいえ、許すのではなくて」彼女は激しく言った。「感謝してください」

　体は触れてはいなかった――キャラモンの双子の弟が金色の目を注いでいる――ものの、二人はぎりぎりまで身を寄せ合っていた。

　英文法詳しくないもので、？？？なんですが、"not with the golden eyes of Caramon’s twin’s on them"これって、レイストが二人を見つめていた、ってことなんですか？私には見ていなかった、という風に見えるんですが。後にレイストは呪文書を読んでいたって記述が出てきますし。まあ、見てなくたってこの場でべたべたはできないと思いますけどね。2巻ドラコニアン戦で学習したはずですから、さすがのキャラモンも。


“I--I meant, can you see the future? Tanis told me your mother was--what do they call it--prescient? I know Tanis comes to you for advice…”

“He said she had the gift for foresight. She could look into the future and see images of what would come to pass.”
“That is true,” Raistlin whispered, then smiled sardonically. “Much good it did her.”

「あの、わたしがお聞きしたかったのは――あなたは未来がご覧になれるの？タニスが言っていたけれど、お母さまは――なんて言ったかしら――予知者でいらしたとか？タニスはよくあなたに助言を頼みにくるようだし……」

「予見の才能を持ってらしたって聞きました。未来を覗いて、何が起こりそうなのかそのしるしを見ることができたとか」
「それは本当です」レイストリンはささやいて、皮肉っぽく微笑した。「ありがたい才能でしたよ」

“She then remarried the man who became our father. He was a simple man, a woodcutter by a trade. Once again, her farsight did not serve her.”

「やがて再婚したのが、ぼくたちの父親です。実父は単純素朴な人間で、樵を生業にしていました。しかし、母の予知力はまたもや効きませんでしたね」

“Why?” Laurana asked gently, caught up in the story, amazed that he was usually taciturn mage was so voluble, not knowing that he was drawing more out of her simply by watching her expressive face than he was giving in return.

「それはなぜ？」ローラナはそっと訊ねた。日頃は無口な魔法使いがすらすらと語ってくれることに夢中で気づいていなかったが、かれのほうでは与える以上の情報を、表情豊かな彼女の顔を観察するだけで読み取っているのだった。

“The birth of my brother and I for one thing,”

“The midwife gave me up for dead, and I would have died, too, if it hadn’t been Kitiara. Her first battle, she used to say, was against death with me as the prize.”

「一つには、ぼくたち兄弟を産んだことですね」
「ぼくは産婆からも、死んだものと見放されました。実際、もしキティアラがいなければ、ぼくは死んでいたでしょう。キティアラはよく言っていました。彼女の初陣は死神からぼくを奪い返したことだ、と」

“He died in an accident when Caramon and I were in our teen. My mother went into one of her trances that day”--Raistlin’s voice dropped--“and never came out. She died of starvation.”

「父はキャラモンとぼくが十代の頃に事故で死にました。母はその日にまた夢幻状態に入り――」レイストリンは声を落とした。「――そのまま覚醒しませんでした。母は餓死したのです」

Raistlin did not speak for long moments, his strange eyes staring out into the chill, gray winter sky. Then his mouth twisted. “It taught me a valuable lesson--learn to control the power. Never let it control you!”

　レイストリンは無言で、冷え冷えとした灰色の冬空を長いあいだ見つめていた。やがて、かれの口が歪んだ。「貴重な教訓でしたよ――力を支配するようにならなければ。決して支配されてはいけないんだ！」

　キティアラの父親の説明にもありましたが、キティアラとキャラモンはそれぞれの父親似で、レイストリンはお母さんの資質を受け継いだのでしょうね。顔もお母さんに似ていたのでしょうか？


“He has the qualities we are told are essential for leadership. He is quick-thinking, intelligent, creative. But most of us possess these--in greater or lessor degree. Why do the others follow Tanis?”

「タニスには指導者に不可欠とされている資質がありますからね。決断力、知性、想像力。でも、それらはぼくたちも大抵持ちあわせています――大なり小なり。なぜみんなはタニスについていくのか？」

“Tanis listens to his feelings. He does not suppress them, as does the knight, or hide them, as does the Plainsman. Tanis realizes that sometimes a leader must think his heart and not his head.”

「タニスは自分の感情を大切にするのです。騎士のように感情を抑えつけたり、平原人のように隠したりしません。指導者たる者、時には頭でなく心で考えねばならない場合もあることを、タニスは知っているのです」

“I notice you leave out yourself.”

「ご自分のことはどうなのかしら」

“I do not follow him.”
“For the time being, Tanis and I simply happen to be traveling in the same direction.”

「ぼくはタニスについて行っているのではありませんよ」

Grinning, Flint pulled his battle-axe out of its holder on his back. “Take this,” he said to Caramon. “Better you have it than any scurvy, lice-ridden city guards.”

「スターム、あんたのも」キャラモンが手を差し出す。

“I’ll guard it carefully, you know that, Sturm.”
“I know,” Sturm said, smiling sadly. He glanced up at Raistlin, who was standing on the stairs. “Besides, there is always the great worm, Catyrpelius, to protect it, isn’t there, mage?”

「気をつけて守るよ、安心してくれ、スターム」
「わかっている」スタームは寂しげに微笑した。そして、階段の途中にいるレイストリンを見上げた。「それに、大うじ虫キャティルペリウスがいつでも守ってくれているのだからな。そうだろう、魔法使い？」

It was the closest to an expression of gratitude that the knight had ever made to the mage. Raistlin smiled briefly.
“Yes,” he whispered. “There is always the Worm.”

　これは、騎士が魔法使いにはじめて示したぎりぎりの感謝の表現だと取ってもよかった。レイストリンは短く微笑した。
「ええ」と、かれはささやいた。「いつでも大うじ虫はいますよ」

“isn’t there, mage?”
…最後の最後でそう来ますか、騎士どの。交される”smiling sadly”と“smiled briefly”。


“Do not fear, knight. Your weapon is safe, as are the lives of those you leave in our care…if any are safe….Farewell, my friends,” he hissed, his strange, hourglass eyes gleaming. “And a long farewell it will be. Some of us are not destined to meet again in this world!” With that, he bowed and, gathering his red robes around him, began to climb the stairs.
Trust Raistlin to exit with a flourish, Tanis thought irritably, hearing booted feet near the door. “Go on!” he ordered. “If he’s right, there’s nothing we can do about it now.”

「ご心配なく、騎士どの。あなたの武器は安全です、ぼくたちに託された人々の命と同じようにね……もし安全というものがあるのなら……。では、ごきげんよう、みなさん」かれの砂時計のようにくびれた眼がきらめいた。
「長いお別れになるでしょう。どなたかとは、これが今生の訣れとなる定めです！」そう言うとかれはお辞儀をし、赤いローブをかきよせて階段を登っていった。
　レイストリンに華々しい退場をさせてしまったことに、タニスはいらだった。軍靴が扉に近づく。
「早く行くんだ！」かれは命じた。「もしかれが正しいなら、もうわれわれに打つ手はない」

“Do not fear…”以降のこの部分、少々長いですが、まとめて紹介しました。実はこのシーン、WoC社版ペーパーバックでは表紙捲った一枚目のページにいきなり引用されています。詳細は本編と異なっていますが。武器に言及する部分を外してある一方で、タニスの苛立ちと焦りの描写が付け加えられています。


Looking up, he saw Laurana watching, her face drawn with fear. She raised her hand, he saw her lips form the words, “I’m sorry,” in elven.

When he reached the end of the street, he glanced back again, hoping to give her some sort of sign. Let her know he understood. Let her know he’d been a fool. Let her know he--
But the curtain was drawn.

　見あげると、ローラナが恐怖にひきつった顔で見つめている。彼女は手を上げてエルフ語で『ごめんなさい』と唇を動かした。

　通りの端へきて、かれはもう一度ふり返った。何か合図を送って伝えたかった。了解した、と。おれは馬鹿だった、と。そして、おれは君を――
　しかし、カーテンは引かれていた。

　ケ・シュの村での”He remembered--“もそうですが、繰り返される言葉の力と言ったら。述語が最後に来る日本語では、今ひとつ薄くなってしまうのが残念です。

「よかろう」＜ハーフ・エルフ＞はレイストリンをじっと見ながら言った。「しかし、君がこの山に登れば、血のしみのように目立つ。白いローブを着るんだな」＜ハーフ・エルフ＞の皮肉な微笑は、ほとんど完璧にレイストリンの物真似になっていた。

“Your brains are in your sword-arm, my brother,” the mage whispered caustically.

「兄さんの脳みそは利き腕の中なんだね」痛烈なささやき。

“It’s one of the biggedt cities I’ve seen. And--“

“There’s no water!”
“Most observant.”

「おれが知ってる中でも、指折りの大きな都だな。

「ささやく」と訳される二つの動詞のうち、”hiss”は鋭く、”whisper”は柔らかい印象を受けます。柔らか〜い痛烈なささやき…


“I feel eyes watching--even now.”
Raistlin put his hand through his brother’s arm. For a rare instant, the two looked remarkable alike. Light and Darkness were not more different than the twins.

「視線を感じるんだ――たった今も」
　レイストリンは兄の腕に手を通した。珍しく、二人は驚くほど似て見えた。いつもは闇と光以上に対照的な双子なのだが。

　この時二人が似て見えたのは、おそらくはレイストリンの方がキャラモンに似て見えたのは、かれが白いローブを着ていたことと無関係ではないでしょう。
　私が「レイストリン」という名を初めて目にしたのは、ゲームブック雑誌「ウォーロック」の読者投稿欄の「白いローブのレイストリン」さんというペンネームでした。その方はレイストに白ローブの者になって欲しかったのでしょうね…


“It’s just that I don’t understand--“
Raistlin sighed and shook his head, withdrawing his arm from his brother’s. Then, leaning on his staff, he began to walk down the hill. “Nor will you,” he murmured. “Ever.”

「おれはその、ただ、おれにはわからんと言いたかっただけで――」
　レイストリンは嘆息すると、頭を振り、兄の腕から手を抜いた。そして、杖によりかかりながら丘を下りはじめた。「兄さんにはわかるもんか」かれはつぶやいた。「永遠に」

　この四語の、とりわけ”Ever”一語のやるせなさ。こういうのが見たくて原書取り寄せたようなものです。満足。
…これ書きながら口に出して悶えていたら、旦那に「こいつが変なのはいつものことだ」という目で見られました。どんどんレイストの気持ちに近づいていきます。

“There is your dragonlance, knight,” Raistlin hissed, “without benefit of the Hammer or the Silver Arm. Will you ride with it into glory, remembering that, for Huma, with glory came death?”

「あなたの竜槍ですよ、騎士どの」レイストリンがささやいた。「＜槌＞の力も＜銀の腕＞の力も借りていません。これを持って栄光へと疾駆しますか、ヒューマにとっては栄光とともに死が訪れたのを承知のうえで？」

“More of your tricks!” he snarled. Spinning on his heel, he stalked away, choking in anger.
“If you meant that as a joke, Raistlin,” Tanis said quietly, “it wasn’t funny.”

「また目くらましか！」かれは怒りのあまり言葉もなく、踵を返して大股で歩みさった。
「レイストリン、冗談のつもりなら」タニスは静かに言った。「おもしろくはなかったぞ」

“A joke?” the mage whispered. His strange golden eyes followed the knight as Sturm walked into the thick blackness of the dwarven city beneath the mountain. “You should know me better, Tanis.”

「冗談？」魔法使いはささやいた。異形の金色の眼は、闇の中へ歩み去る騎士スタームの姿を追っていた。山の直下のドワーフの都は、闇が深い。「まだぼくのことをご存じないのですか、タニス」

The mage laughed--the weird laughter Tanis had heard only once before. Then, bowing sardonically to the half-elf, Raistlin disappeared, following the knight into the shadow.

　魔法使いは笑った。タニスが以前一度だけ耳にした、不気味な笑い声だった。やがてレイストリンは、わざとらしく＜ハーフ・エルフ＞にお辞儀をすると、騎士と同じ暗闇の中へ消えていった。

　直訳すると「あなたはぼくのことをもっと良く知るべきですね、タニス」なんですが、この訳がまたなんと素敵なこと！皮肉度50％増し！（当社比）

　一方、さるところで拝見したネタ四コマ漫画の影響か、渾身の冗談を「おもしろくなかった」と言われて陰でひっそり落ち込むレイストリンなんてのも想像して勝手に震えております。素敵シーンの印象を台無しにしてごめんなさい。反省します。

The company of the dark-souled, cynical mage seemed more suited to him tonight than music and laughter.

　今夜のタニスには音楽と笑い声よりも、心を秘めた皮肉屋の魔法使いといるほうが似つかわしいように思えた。

Looking him in the moonlight, Tanis was startled to see the mage’s resembrance to his half-sister, Kitiara. It was a fleeting impression and gone almost as soon as it came, but it brought the woman to Tanis’s mind, adding to his feelings of unrest and disquiet.

　月明かりの下でかれを見て、タニスは魔法使いが、異父姉キティアラに似ていることにはっとした。それは一瞬の印象で、浮かぶや否や消えてしまったが、タニスの落ち着かず不安な心に、さらに彼女への思いを連ねることになった。

“Do you see no hope?”
“Hope is the denial of reality. It is the carrot dangled before the draft horse to keep him plodding along in a vain attempt to reach it.”
“Are you saying we should just give up?”
“I’m saying we should remove the carrot and walk forward with our eyes open,” Raistlin answered.

「希望は見えないのか？」
「希望は現実の否定です。荷馬の鼻先に吊るして空しく歩き続けさせるだけの人参です」
「では、ただ諦めろというのか？」
「ぼくは、人参を取り除いて自分の目でもって前進すべきだ、と言っているのです」

“Still,” the kender said softly, “we have to keep trying and hoping. That’s what’s important, the trying and the hoping. Maybe that’s most important of all.”

Something floated gently down from the sky, brushing past the kender’s nose. Tas reached and caught it in his hand.
It was a small, white chicken feather.

「それでも」と、＜ケンダー＞は静かに言った。「ぼくたちは努力と希望を失ってはいけないんだ。それこそが大事なんだ――努力することと希望を持つことが。きっと何よりもいちばん大事なことなんだ」

　何かが空からふわふわとただよってきて、＜ケンダー＞の鼻先をかすめた。タッスルは手をのばして受けとめた。
　それは、小さな白い鳥の羽毛だった。

　フィズバンが声を張り上げた。「プヴェセルフ――」だが、呪文は途中で悲鳴になった。ぐしゃりと音を立てて老魔術師が床に激突した。タッスルホッフは深く悲しんだ。次は自分の番だと知ってはいたが。

Then it was snowing.
At least that was what the kender thought. Then he realized with a shock that he was surrounded by millions and millions of feathers--like an explosion of chickens!

　少なくとも＜ケンダー＞はそう思った。それからはっと気がついた。かれを取り巻いているのは何百万何千万もの羽毛だった――まるでひよこの爆発だった！

“Poor Fizban,” Tas said, blinking tears from his eyes as he floundered in an ocean of white feathers. “His last spell must have been featherfall like Raistlin uses. Wouldn’t you know it? He just got the feathers.”

「かわいそうなフィズバン」タッスルは白い羽毛の大海原でもがきながら、潤んだ目をしばたたいた。「最後の呪文は、きっとレイストリンみたいな『羽毛落下』だったんだ。わかんない？あの人はただの羽毛になっちゃったんだ」

　英語には「ひよこ」を指す言葉がなく、成鳥もひよこもchickenまたはchickだったと思いますが、ここは「ひよこの爆発」ですよね。
　レイストリンがザク・ツァロスで使っていた羽毛落下の呪文は”Pveathrfall”でした。スペル間違ってます、老師。

“Where’s Eben?”
“Last I saw him, he was running for the mines. I couldn’t figure out why--“
The knight and half-elf gasped in sudden realization.
“Of course,” said Tanis softly, his voice lost in the commotion. “It all fits.”

「エーベンはどこだ？」
「私が最後に見かけたときには、鉱山のほうへ走っていた。なぜだろうと思ったが――」
　騎士と＜ハーフ・エルフ＞は不意に思いあたってあえいだ。
「もちろんだ」タニスは低く言った。動揺で声も出なかった。「すべてがぴったりと合う」

　スタームはどうあれ、タニスはギルサナスのことは信じ続けていて、さらに先刻、もう何度目か判らないレイストリンの体張った助けを受けていて、な・ん・で今更エーベンの裏切りに動揺するのか本当に理解に（以下略）


The Dragon Highlord ran to the ledge as Pyros dropped past him. Verminaard climbed swiftly and skillfully onto the dragon’s back. Though separated by mutual distrust, the two fought well together. Their hatred for petty races they strove to conquer, combined with their desire for power, joined them in a bond much stronger than either cared by admit.

　ドラゴン卿が楼台に駆け寄ると、パイロスはその下に降り立った。ヴェルミナアルドはひらりと竜の背にまたがった。お互いに不信で隔てあっていても、この二者は、闘うときには以心伝心だった。攻略相手である弱小種族への憎悪に加えて、権力欲まで共にするため、かれらはお互いが認めているよりはるかに強い絆で結ばれていた。

　愛はなくても共感はある。レイストとキャラモンとは逆のコンビですね。


“Eben!” he cried in disbelief. “But who’s that with him?”
“He won’t escape!” Sturm shouted.

“I, too, have a score to settle with this man,” the mage hissed.

「エーベン！」かれは信じられずに叫んだ。「だが、一緒にいるのは誰だ？」
「やつめ、逃がさん！」スタームは声を張り上げた。

「ぼくも、」あの男にはたっぷり借りがあります」魔法使いは鋭くささやいた。

Suddenly Raistlin broke from the group and ran back to Tanis. “The sword!” he hissed. He grabbed the half-elf’s cloak and threw it back to reveal the blade.

　最初かれは、気のせいだ、緊張感のための耳鳴りだと考えた。

　突然、レイストリンが列を抜けてタニスのもとに駆け戻った。「その剣！」鋭く言う。かれは＜ハーフ・エルフ＞のマントを引きはいで剣をさらした。

“Magic,”
“Can you stop it?”
“No,”
“I remember now. This is Wyrmslayer, the famed magical sword of Kith-Kanan. It is reacting to the presence of the dragon.”

「無理です」「やっと思い出しました、これはワームスレイヤー、有名なキス=カナンの魔剣です。ドラゴンがいるので反応しているのです」

“I hear a sound I have not heard in centuries, I smell the foul smell of steel!”

「何世紀もついぞ耳にしたことのない音がする。鋼の汚臭がするぞえ！」

“Hey, you! Don’t hurt our dragon!” one little boy yelled.

「おい、こら！ぼくたちのドラゴンに何をする！」小さな男の子がどなった。

“Children, please!” Chieftain’s Daughter, her voice stern and commanding, brought order to the chaos.

「子供たち、お聞きなさい！」族長の娘の有無を言わさぬ声が、大混乱に秩序を回復させた。

“Good-bye, Flamestrike,”

“No!” shrieked Matafleur in a heartbreaking voice. “No! Don’t fight my children! Please! It is me you want! Fight me! Don’t harm my children!”

“I’m with you--“ Sturm began, drawing his sword.
“Leave us knight,” Raistlin whispered softly from the shadows. “Your weapon is useless. I will stay with Tanis.”

「わたしがついている」スタームが言いながら剣を抜いた。
「ぼくたちにまかせてください、騎士どの」レイストリンが暗がりから低くささやきかけた。「あなたの武器は役に立ちません。ぼくがタニスについていましょう」

The half-elf glanced at the mage in astonishment. Raistlin’s strange, golden eyes met his, knowing what he was thinking: do I trust him? Raistlin gave him no help, almost as if he were goading him to refusal.

＜ハーフ・エルフ＞は驚いて魔法使いを見やった。レイストリンの異形の金色の目が、その視線を受け止める。タニスの考え――不信からのためらい――を知っている目。レイストリンはまるでタニスの不信をあおるかのように、知らんふりをした。

“Get out,” Tanis said to Sturm.

“Get out!” Tanis repeated.

「行ってくれ」タニスはスタームに言った。
「なんと？」かれは叫んだ。「気でも狂ったのか？まさかこの……を信じて――」
「行ってくれ！」タニスは繰り返した。

“There is little magic I can work against a red dragon,” Raistlin whispered swiftly.
“Can you buy us time?” Tanis asked.
Raistlin smiled the smile of one who knows death is so near it is past fearing. “I can,” he whispered. “Move back near the tunnel. When you hear me start to speak, run.”

「レッド・ドラゴンに効く魔法はすこししか知りません」レイストリンが素早くささやく。
「時間稼ぎはできるか？」タニスは訊いた。
　レイストリンは微笑した。死を間近に見て恐怖を通り越した者の微笑である。「できます」かれはささやいた。「トンネルのそばにさがってください。ぼくが魔法を唱えはじめるのが聞こえたら、逃げるのです」

“They will not escape!” But just as she sucked in a great breath, she heard another sound--the sound of her children. “No,” she realized in frustration. “I dare not. My children! I might harm my children….”

「逃がすものか」しかし、彼女が深く息を吸った瞬間、別の音が聞こえた――彼女の子供たちの声。「駄目」彼女は呆然と気づいた。「できない。わたしの子供たち！あの子たちを傷つけてしまう……」

「お父さんはなんと？」

“He said kenders were small because we were meant to do small things. ’If you look at all the big things in the world closely,’ he said, ‘you’ll see that they’re really made up of small things all joined together.’ That big dragon there comes to nothing but tiny drops of blood, maybe. It’s the small things that make the difference.”

「ケンダーが小さいのは、小さなことをするように生まれついているからだって。『世の中の大きなものを見てごらん、みんな本当は小さなものが集まってできているんだよ』って。下にいるあの大きなドラゴンだって、ただの血のひとしずくが集まってるだけなんだろうね、きっと。大事なのは小さなものなんだよね」

“Very wise, your father.”

The kender’s pointed chin jutted forward, his lips tightened. His father, if he had seen him, would not have known this small, resolute person for his son.

「偉いお父さんじゃ」

＜ケンダー＞は尖った顎を突き出し、唇をひき結んでいた。もし父親がかれを見たなら、この小さな決然とした者が自分の息子だとはわからなかったろう。

“We’ll leave the big things to the others,”
“We’ll do the small thing, even if it doesn’t seem very important.”

「大きなものはほかの人たちにまかせよう」
「ぼくたちは小さなことをするんだ、たとえあまり重要なことには見えなくても」

「もし通念のように神々がわれわれに背を向けたのではなく、本当は背を向けたのはわれわれ人間のほうなのだと言うなら、ではなぜ神々は、これほど長くご自分たちの存在を知らせなかったのだ？」

Goldmoon knelt down beside the dying man in silence, thinking how to phrase her answer.

　ゴールドムーンは黙って瀕死の男のそばに膝をつき、どのように自分の考えを言い表そうかと考えた。

“Imagine you are walking through a wood, carrying your most precious possession--a rare and beautiful gem. Suddenly you are attacked by a vicious beast. You drop the gem and run away. When you realize the gem lost, you are afraid to go back into woods and search for it. Then someone comes along with another gem. Deep in your heart, you know it is not as valuable as the one you lost, but you are still too frightened to go back to look for the other. Now, does this mean the gem has left the forest, or is it still lying there, shining brightly beneath the leaves, waiting for you to return?”

「あなたは今森の中を歩いているのだ、と想像してみてください。手にはあなたのいちばん大切な財産を持っています。珍しい、美しい宝石です。突然あなたは猛獣に襲われました。宝石をとり落として逃げだします。宝石を失くしたのに気づいたのですが、森に戻って捜すのが恐ろしく思えます。そのとき、ある人が別の宝石を持ってやってきました。あなたは、心の底ではそれが失くした宝石ほど高価なものではないとわかっているのですが、それでも恐ろしくて捜しに戻ることができません。さて、ではその宝石は、森からどこかへ失せてしまったのでしょうか？それとも、まだそこに落ちたまま、枯れ葉の下でまぶしく輝きながら、あなたが戻ってくるのを待っているのでしょうか？」

「クリンの神々とはいかなる存在なのか？」
　過去記事「古い神々」や「いにしえの神々」で何度も問うてきましたが、どうやらクリンの善の神々は、正しい知識を持つものの祈りしか聞き届けないのではなく、正しい名前で祈られなければ、聞き届けることができない、そういう枷を嵌められた存在なのかも知れません。それは＜大変動＞以降、自分たちの名が忘れられて以来、さぞもどかしかったことでしょうね。
　私は幼少期に受けた教育の影響で、神というものは全知全能で、どんな小さな祈りの声も聞き届けてくださる慈悲深い存在なのだと思っていました。だから長じて、祈りが何の力も持たない現実を目の当たりにして激しく失望することになるのですが。
　森の中で息をひそめている小さな宝石。猛獣に襲われる危険を冒してでも取り戻しに行く価値が、それにはあるのでしょうか？人はそう思いたいのでしょうか？人はそれを求めるようにできているのでしょうか？


“Not yet,” Sturm said harshly. “But we can expect them any minute. Both Eben and Gilthanas are gone.”

「まだだ」スタームが険しく言う。「しかし、いつ来てもおかしくない。エーベンとギルサナスが二人ともいないのだ」

　深刻なシーンのはずなんですけど、険しい顔のスタームも、キャラモンもタニスも女装してるんですよね、と想像するとぶちこわしになるのでやめましょう。やめましょうったら。（でも脳裏から消えない）
　以下、話は前後しますが続けていきます。

“I heard something, Tanis, and I went to investigate,” Eben said, his mouth set in a firm line.

「忘れるな――ぼくは忠告したぞ」ギルサナスはレイストリンに視線を移した。「ぼくはこの魔法使いが、自分で言うとおり本当に疲れきっているのか見に戻ったのだ。それほどでもなかったようだな、いなくなっていたのだから」

“Why should I speak?” Raistlin whispered harshly, his voice soft and lethal with hatred. “None of you trusts me, so why should you believe me? I refuse to answer, and you may think as you choose. If you believe I am a traitor--kill me now! I will not stop you--“ He began to cough.

「なぜぼくが話さなければならない？」レイストリンがとげとげしくささやいた。低い、憎しみにとぎすまされた声だった。「誰一人ぼくを信用していないのに、どうしてぼくの言葉が信じてもらえます？返答は拒否します。お好きなように考えればいいでしょう。ぼくが裏切り者だと信じているなら――今殺せばいい！ぼくはとめませんよ――」かれは咳こみはじめた。

“You’ll have to kill me, too,” Caramon said in a choked voice. He led his brother to his bed.

「そうなれば、君たちはおれも殺さねばならんな」キャラモンは押し殺した声で言うと、弟を寝床に連れて行った。

“No. I doubt Flamestrike could cast a spell on anything anymore.” Maritta smiled sadly. “ The poor critter’s more than half-mad. Her own children were killed in some great war or other and now she’s got in her head that our children are her children. I don’t know where his lordship dug her up, but it was a sorry thing to do and I hope he pays for it someday!”

「いいえ、フレームストライクがまだ何かに呪文をかけられるとは、とても思えないわ」マリッタは悲しげに言った。「気の毒に、あのへびさんはもう頭がおかしくなっているんですよ。自分の子供を何かの大きな戦さだかで失くしたもんで、今はあたしたちの子供を自分の子供だと思い込んでるんです。ドラゴン卿がどこで彼女を拾ったのか知らないけれど、まったくかわいそうなことをするもんですよ。いつかその報いを受けるがいいわ」

“Shave!” Sturm roared in such fury that the women scurried away from the knight in alarm.

「ひげを剃るだと！」スタームの激昂に、女たちがさっと逃げ散った。

Goldmoon finally took Tanis aside to explain that, in their tribe, any warrior who committed a cowardly act in battle was forced to wear women’s clothes until he redeemed himself.

　結局、ゴールドムーンがタニスをかたわらへ連れていって説明したのだが、かれらの部族では戦さで臆病な行いをした戦士は誰でも、名誉挽回を果たすまで女のなりをさせられるのだ。

“Why don’t you shave?” Laurana asked, staring at Tanis’s beard. “Or do you truly enjoy flaunting your human side as Gilthanas says?”
“I don’t flaunt it,” Tanis replied evenly. “I just got tired of trying to deny it, that’s all.”

「あなたはなぜ剃らないの？」ローラナはタニスの顎鬚を見ながら言った。「それともギルサナスの言ったように、本当は人間の血を見せびらかして喜んでいるのかしら？」

“What I did was the act of a lovesick little girl. I foolishly endangered your lives.”
“It will not happen again. I will prove I can be of value to the group.”

「わたしのしたことは恋わずらいの小さな女の子の行動だったわ。考えなしにあなた方の命を危険にさらしたんですもの」
「もう二度とあんなことにはなりません。わたしがいてよかった、とみんなに思ってもらえるようにします」

Although she talked glibly about being skilled in fighting, she had never killed so much as a rabbit.

　口では戦いに熟練していると言ったものの、ウサギ一匹さえ殺したことがなかった。

There had, after all, been one last crisis. Raistlin, coughing until he was exhausted, said he was too weak to accompany them.

“You do not need me this night,” the mage whispered.

Glancing back, Caramon saw his twin, shrouded in blankets, lying in a dark, shadowy corner.

　ここにきて、もうひとつ厄介なことが起きた。レイストリンが激しく咳きこんだあげく、同行できるだけの力がない、と言い出したのだ。

「今夜はぼくの力は不要だろ」魔法使いはささやいた。

　ふり返ったキャラモンの目に、双子の弟が毛布にくるまり、暗くぼんやりした隅に横たわっているのが見えた。

　駄々こねたのはこの時女装するのが嫌だったからとか、いなくなってた理由は一人でこっそり女装の研究してたからとか（そりゃ言えませんわ）、いよいよ翌日出かけるときはどうしたのか、それを見たタニスが（キティアラに似ている…）とかなんとか…すみません、誰か止めてください妄想。

“Oh, certainly. Let’s see, light…” Tas heard the magician fumbling in his pouches. Apparently he found what he was searching for, because he soon gave a little crow of triumph, spoke a few words, and a small puffball of bluish-yellow flame appeared, hovering near the magician’s hat.

The glowing puffball whizzed up, danced around Tasslehoff as if to inspect the kender, then returned to the proud magician. Tas was enchanted.

　まばゆい鬼火はひゅんと上昇すると、まるで検分するように＜ケンダー＞のまわりでくるくる舞い、やがて自慢げな魔術師のもとへ戻った。タッスルは心を奪われた。

“Can you send the light up here?”
“Light, to the wheel,” Fizban instructed.
The light wavered in the air for a moment, then danced back and forth in a decidedly nay-saying manner.

「ここまで明かりをよこしてくれる？」
「明かりや――歯車へお行き」フィズバンが指図した。
　明かりはしばらく空中で揺れていたが、やがて、きっぱりといやいやを言うように前後に跳ねた。

“Light--to the wheel!”

The puffball flame darted around to hide behind the magician’s hat. Fizban, making a wild grab for it, nearly fell, and flung both arms around the chain. The puffball light danced in the air behind him as if enjoying game.

「明かりや――歯車へ行くんじゃ！」

　鬼火はぴゅっと飛んで、魔術師の帽子のうしろに隠れた。フィズバンはぐいとつかもうとして危うく落ちかけ、あたふたと両手で鎖につかまった。鬼火はゲームでも楽しむように、かれのうしろの宙で踊った。

“Uh, I guess we’ve got enough light, after all,”
“No discipline in the younger generation,” Fizban grumbled. “His father--now there was a puffball…”

「えーと、明かりはもうこれで十分なんじゃないかな」
「若いもんはしつけがなっとらん」フィズバンが不平を鳴らす。「あいつの親父さんは――さてさて、昔あるところに鬼火がおってな……」

“Light--to the tunnel,”

The puffball appeared to consider the command. Slowly it skittered to the edge of the tunnel, and then stopped.
“Inside the tunnel!” the magician commanded.
The puffball refused.

「明かりや――トンネルへお行き」
　鬼火は命令について考えこんでいるように見えた。そして、ゆっくりとトンネルの端まで跳ねていったが、そこで止まってしまった。
「トンネルの中じゃ！」魔術師が命じる。
　鬼火は拒否した。

“I think it’s afraid of the dark,” Fizban said apologetically.
“My goodness, how remarkable!”

「どうも暗闇を怖がっとるらしい」フィズバンが弁解する。
「うわ、なんて珍しい」

The puffball flame wandered over and settled on the brim of the magician’s hat.

Then he sniffed.

“Uh, Fizban,” he said. “Your hat’s on fire.”

　鬼火はきょろきょろと飛びまわっていたが、魔術師の帽子の縁に腰を据えた。

　しばらくして、かれはくんくんと匂いを嗅いだ。

「えーと、フィズバン」かれは言った。「あんたの帽子、燃えてるよ」

　2巻最高の萌えキャラ、鬼火たんです。
「鬼火」と言ったらwill o’ wispかfoxfireか、はたまたIgnis Fatuusと思ってたらまさかのpuffballですか。マスターの命令にいやいやしますか。”his”ってことは男の子ですか。鬼火のくせに暗闇怖いですか。帽子に止まって焼いちゃいますか。

“I sense a power behind that door greater than any I have felt since--“
“Since when?” his brother prompted gently.
“The Tower of High Sorcery!” Raistlin whispered. “I warn you, do not open the door!”

「その扉の向こうに強大な力を感じます。これほどの力は……以来です」
「え、いつだって！」かれの兄がそっと促す。
「＜上位魔法の塔＞以来！」レイストリンはささやいた。「これだけは言っておきます。その扉をあけてはいけません！」

His voice trailed off, his eyes widened in horror.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know!”
“I do!”
“It is the spirit of a dark elf!”

　かれの声が消えてゆき、目が恐怖に見開かれた。
「なんだ？」
「わからん」
「ぼくにはわかる」
「黒エルフの霊魂です！」

“That won’t stop her!” Eben cried, panic-striken.
“No,” said Raistlin softly. “Her magic is powerful, more powerful than mine. I can cast a spell on the door, but it will weaken me greatly. I suggest you run while you can. If it fails, perhaps I can stall her.”

「そんなことではとめられない！」エーベンが恐慌に陥って叫ぶ。
「ええ」レイストリンは優しく言った。「彼女の魔力は強く、ぼくのよりも強力です。これから扉に呪文をかけますが、そうするとぼくはかなり力を失ってしまいます。できるかぎり逃げてください。もし失敗しても、ぼくが時間稼ぎをできると思います」

「ぼくは我が身を無駄にするのだ――馬鹿な仲間達を、勝手にはまっている窮地から救い出すためだ」まさしくそのものですよ。スターム、ギルサナス、後でちゃんとレイストリンに詫びいれたんでしょうね？まあ本人はしばらく気絶しちゃってるし、仮に詫びられたとしても、つーんと受け流すんでしょうけど。今後もまだレイストを疑いの目で見ている彼らの精神構造のほうが理解に苦しみます。


Images of his battle with another dark elf in the Towers of High Sorcery came back to his mind. He struggled to blot out the evil memory of the battle that wrecked his body and came close to festroying his mind, but he felt himself losing control.

＜上位魔法の塔＞で別の黒エルフと戦ったときの有様が、かれの脳裏をよぎった。かれは、体ばかりか精神までも壊されかけたあの戦いの忌まわしい記憶を消し去ろうとあがいたが、しだいに自制心を失ってゆくのがわかった。

Then from somewhere inside the mage came a strength he had discovered within himself only twice before--in the Tower and on the alter of the black dragon in Xak-Tsaroth.

　そのとき、魔法使いの内側のどこかから、力がわきあがってきた。今までに二度しか――＜塔＞と、ザク・ツァロスの黒いドラゴンの祭壇でしか――現われなかった力である。

bad:goodの反対で、いろいろな意味で質が劣っていることを意味する最も一般的な語。
evil:道徳的に悪い意味ではbadよりも強く
wicked:はさらに強く積極的に悪いことをしようとする気持ちを暗示する。

　フリントはしばらくキャラモンを見守っていたが、とうとう自分から進み出た。かれは扉を調べて、ふん、と頭を振った。「偽扉だ！」

「あたりまえだ」フリントが鼻を鳴らす。「わしらは偽扉を偽らしく造ったりはせん――どぶドワーフにだってわかることだ」

“Stand back,” Raistlin whispered, carefully leaning his staff against a wall.

「さがってください」レイストリンがささやいて、注意深く壁に杖をもたせかけた。

 “Khetsaram pakliol!” There was a flare of orange light, but not from the door--it came from the wall!
“Move!” Raistlin grabbed his brother and jerked him back, just as the entire wall, bronze door and all, began to pivot.

「ケッサラム・パクリオル！」オレンジ色の光がぱっと燃えあがった。しかし、扉からではなく――壁からだった。
「どいて」レイストリンが兄をつかんでぐいとさがらせると同時に、壁全体が、正道の扉も含めて、そっくりそのまま回転しはじめた。

　コメントで「レイストリンはたまにキャラモンの前で口調が幼くなる」とのご指摘を頂いてますが、この「どいて」もきてると思います。日常生活でうっかり使って自爆しそう。

　邦訳「消耗する」ではなんとも思わなかったんですが、”drain”と聞いて、まさかフィスタンダンティラスが呪文を通じてレイストの体力を吸い取ってるんじゃないでしょうね？と疑いを覚えました。

The throne they guarded was not empty. Upon it sat the skeletal remains of what had once been a male--of what race, none could say, death being the great equalizer.

The bone hands, fingers lying gracefully in death, rested on a sheathed sword.

　彼らが護っている玉座は空席ではなかった。玉座には、かつて男性であった者の骸骨が座っていた――どの種族の者かは、偉大な平等主義者である＜死＞のおかげで誰にもわからなかった。

　骨張った両手の指は、死してなお優雅に、鞘に収めた剣の上に置かれていた。


　巨大なめくじ登場。さらに降って湧いたローラナの登場に動揺したタニスは、なめくじの腐食液を浴びた右手ごと剣をやられてしまいます。その時――

“The sword is enchanted,” Raistlin said softly, coughing. “How did you get it?”

“I was near the body of the elven king, searching for something to throw at the slug, when, suddenly, the sword was in my hand. It had been take out of the sheath and--“

「その剣には魔法がかかっています」レイストリンは咳こみながら低く言った。「どうやって取りました？」
「おれはエルフの王の遺体のそばにいて、何かなめくじに投げるものを捜していた。すると、不意に剣が手の中にあったんだ。鞘から抜かれていて――」

“Yes?”
“He gave it to me,” Tanis said softly. “I remember, his hand touched mine. He pulled it from its sheath.”
“Who?” asked Gilthanas. “None of us were near there.”
“Kith-Kanan….”

「それで？」
「かれがおれにくれた」タニスは低く言った。「思い出した。かれの手がおれの手に触れた、かれが剣を鞘から抜いた」
「誰が？」と、ギルサナス。「ぼくらは誰もあのそばにはいなかった」
「キス=カナンだ……」

　ファンタジーものに登場する武器の多くは、木を切り倒す斧だったり、獲物を狩る弓や槍だったり、作物を刈り取る鎌だったりと、実用的な起源を持っています。しかして武器の中の武器、剣は対人戦闘のために生まれてきました。対人戦闘、権力闘争、つまりは権力の象徴（剣と権が同じ音を持つのは偶然でしょうか？）。まして王の剣と言ったら王権そのものです。
　キス=カナンは何故タニスに剣を託したのでしょう。後にかれの息子ギルサスがクォリネスティの王位に就いたのは、母の血筋のおかげばかりではないのかもしれません。

戦記2巻p131〜 疑惑

「“スラ=モリ”の意味は？」

"I'll believe--"直訳すると「君やキャラモンが裏切り者になる日が来たら、かれ（ギルサナス）が裏切り者になったと信じるだろう」英語的まわりくどさ？


　拙文の下書きにはWordを使ってるんですが、実はこの辺りのメモを取ってる頃まで、ティカの綴りをTicaと勘違いしてました。気がついて慌てて全文置換かけたら、”frantically”なんて単語から”that I can’t”なんてのまで置換されてカオスなことに。あぶないあぶない。

　本題に戻りまして、謎の男エーベン登場。ギルサナスと旧知の仲のようですが…。


“I dared not leave him behind,” Gilthanas answered grimly. “One of us should keep an eye on him.”
“Yes.” Tanis fell silent.

「残すのが不安だったからだ」ギルサナスはむっつりと答えた。「かれから目を離さないことだ」
「ああ」タニスは沈黙した。

“And on me, too, you’re thinking,” Gilthanas said in a tight voice. “I know what the others say--the knight especially. But, I swear to you, Tanis, I’m not a traitor! I want one thing!” The elf’s eyes gleamed feverishly in the dying light. “I want to destroy this Verminaard. If you could have seen him as his dragon destroyed my people! I’d gladly sacrifice my life--“

「ぼくも同じだ、と思っているんだろう」ギルサナスが固い声で言った。「みんながなんと言っているかくらい、わかってる。とくにあの騎士だ。だが、タニス、ぼくは誓って裏切り者ではないぞ！ぼくの望みはただひとつ」エルフの瞳は消えてゆく光の中で熱っぽく燃えた。「ぼくはあのヴェルミナアルドをうち滅ぼしたい。やつがドラゴンにエルフたちを殺させたときのありさまを、おまえも見ていたなら！ぼくは喜んで命を――」ギルサナスはだしぬけに言葉を止めた。

　ギルサナスが「タニス」と呼ぶのはこれが初めてですね。すぐに戻っちゃいましたが。


“And our lives as well?”

“If you must know, Tanthalas, your life means that--“ He snapped his fingers. “But the lives of my people are everything to me.”

「おれたちの命も、か？」
「知りたいと言うのなら、タンサラス、おまえたちの命など、こうだ」かれはぱちんと指を鳴らした。「だが、エルフの民の命はぼくにはすべてなのだ」

　レイストリンほどではないですが、ギルサナスも信じてもらおうって気がないですね。ほらほら、奴は讒言吐きまくりだと言うのに！
　ところでタニスは”our lives”「おれたちの命」と訊ねていますが、原文のギルサナスは”your life”と単数（タニス一人）について答えています。そして邦訳では「おまえたちの命」。なんだか気になりました。

The Disks are too precious to risk on a raid into Pax Tharkas.”

「ああ、そうとも、坊主」フリントが口をはさんだ。「だが、この決定はおまえさんの頭から生まれたものだ――心の中からじゃない。胸の奥底ではおまえさんも、別行動を取るべきだとは本当に信じちゃいない」

「指導者たる者、時には頭でなく心で考えねばならないことを、タニスは知っているのです」3巻レイストリンの言葉。そう、頭はレイストに任せておけばいいのです。


“I’m going with you, Tanis. I plan to become a swordswoman, like Kithiara.”

「わたし、女剣士になるの。キティアラみたいに」

“Now maybe we can get some sleep.” Fizban yawned.
“Wait a minute, Old One,” Tanis said sternly. “You are not one of us. You’re definitely going with the elves.”
“Am I?”

「さてと、これでみんな少し寝れるかな」フィズバンがあくびをした。
「ちょっと待ってください」タニスが厳しく言った。「あなたはおれたちの一員ではない。当然エルフと一緒に行ってもらいます」
「わしが？」

He stared at Tanis with such a penetrating--almost menacing--gaze that the half-elf involuntarily took a step back, suddenly sensing an almost palpable aura of power surrounding the old man.

“I go where I choose in this world, and I choose to go with you, Tanis Half-Elven.”

　その貫き通すような――ほとんど脅かすような――視線で見つめられ、タニスは不意に、老人の周囲に手でさわれるほどの力の霊気を感じて、あとじさった。
「わしはこの世界のどこでも、行くと決めたところに行く。そして、わしはあんたと行くと決めたんじゃ、ハーフ・エルフのタニス」

Raistlin glanced at Tanis as if to say, Now you understand! 

“I speak you this, Raistlin,” Tanis said suddenly, using Camptalk, a corrupted form of Common developed among the racially mixed mercenaries of Krynn.

“We talk if want,” Raistlin answered in the same language, “but little know I.”

　レイストリンが、もうわかったでしょうと言うように、ちらりとタニスを見た。

「このことで少し話をしたい、レイストリン」タニスはふと軍隊言葉を使った。クリンの多種族混成の傭兵たちの間で発達した、共通語の訛ったものである。

「必要ならば話しますが」レイストリンは同じ言葉で答えた。「でも、ぼくの知っていることはほとんどありませんよ」

“You fear. Why?”

“I know not, Tanis. But--you right. There power be, within Old One. I feel great power. I fear.”
“And I hunger!”

「君は恐れているな。なぜだ？」
