“Hush!” ordered Kit in a low voice. “Or you will destroy everything!”

「おれを裏切ったな！」かれは息ができなかった。「そんな話は計画になかった！」
「しっ！」キティアラが低く制する。「すべてをぶち壊したいの？」

I grant your request. The elfwoman’s soul will be given to Lord Soth, and we accept the half-elf into our service. In recognition of this, he will lay his sword at the feet of Lord Ariakas.

《そなたの申し出は叶えてやろう。エルフ女の魂はソス卿に下し、ハーフ・エルフはわが僕に加える。その証として、その者は剣をアリアカスの足下に置くべし》

“Ascend the platform and lay your sword at Ariakas’s feet,”
“It is ritual, nothing more. But it buys me time.”

“Time for what? What do you have planed?”
“You should have told me--“

「台座へ上って、自分の剣をアリアカスの足下に置くのよ」
「ただの儀式だよ。だが、その間に時間が稼げる」

「なんの時間が？いったい君は何を計画しているんだ？」
「なぜおれに内緒にしていた――」

“The less you know the better, Tanis.” Kitiara smiled charmingly, for the sake of those watching. There was some nervous laughter, a few crude jokes at what appeared to be a lover’s parting. But Tanis saw no answering smile in Kit’s brown eyes.

「知らないほうがおまえのためだ、タニス」キティアラは魅力たっぷりに微笑した。しかしそれは群衆の眼を意識したもので、案の定、数カ所から意味ありげな笑い声がわき、“恋人たちのしばしの別れ”をからかう声があがった。しかし、キティアラのとび色の目が微笑していないのは、タニスが知っていた。

Whoever holds the Crown, rules! The words rang in Tanis’s mind.
Kill Ariakas, take the Crown!

『この冠をもちたる者こそ支配者なれ！』その言葉がタニスの脳裏で鳴り響く。
　アリアカスを殺して、冠を奪うのだ！

Ariakas had been watching Tanis with a bored expression, a smile of amused contempt on his face. Then he lost interest in the half-elf completely, having other matters to worry about. Tanis saw the man’s gaze go to Kitiara, pondering.

　アリアカスは退屈げな表情で、うっすらと軽蔑の笑みを浮かべながらタニスを見ていたが、やがてすっかりかれに興味を失い、当面の頭痛の種に心を戻した。タニスは、アリアカスが考え込みながらキティアラに視線を移すのを見た。

Ariakas had the look of a player leaning across a gameboard, contemplating his next move, trying to guess what his opponent intends.

　アリアカスは、まるでゲーム盤に身を乗り出して次の一手を思いめぐらし、敵の胸の内を読もうとしているプレイヤーのような眼をしていた。

That aura of power surrounding him…Ariakas was a magic-user!

Of course, that’s why there were no guards! Among this crowd, Ariakas would trust no one. He would use his own magic to guard himself!

The half-elf’s shoulders slumped. He was defeated.

　かれのまとっているあの霊気……アリアカスは魔法の使い手なのだ！

　当然、護衛はいないはずである！この群衆のなかで、アリアカスは誰も信用していないのだ。かれはわが身を守るのに自分の魔術を恃んでいるのである！

　タニスはがくりと肩を落とした。敗北は決まった。

And then, “Strike, Tanis! Do not fear his magic! I will aid you!”

　が、そのとき。「討て、タニス！かれの魔術を恐れるな！手を貸そう！」

The voice was no more than a whisper, yet so clear and so intense, Tanis could practically feel hot breath touch his ear.

　その声はささやき声でしかなかったが、あまりにも鮮明で激しかったので、タニスは熱い息を耳に感じた気さえした。
