「共に闘った人間たちと一緒に町の中央の広場で杭につながれていました」ギルサナスの声はとぎれがちだった。「ドラコニアンたちの警備兵が取り囲んでいたので、ぼくは夜を待ちました。すると――」

「空に赤いドラゴンが現われ――」

“Some of the humans tied to stakes went into a frenzy of terror, screaming piteously. But my warriors remained calm and defiant, although allwere affected alike by the dragonfear the monster generates.

「杭に結ばれた人間の中には、恐怖の余り狂ったように泣き叫ぶ者もいました。しかし、ぼくの仲間たちはみんな同じようにドラゴンへの恐怖に苛まれながらも、落ち着いて勇敢でいてくれました」

The dragonmaster did not seem to find this pleasing. He glared at them, and then spoke in a voice that came from the depths of the Abyss. His words still burn in my mind.”

「ドラゴンの騎手はこれが気に入らなかったらしく、かれらを睨みつけ、奈落の底から響くような声で演説しました。その言葉は今でも脳裏に焼き付いています」

“’Let this be your final warning--all who watch! Ember, destroy!’”

「『これを貴様たちの最後の警告とせよ――よく見ておけ！エンバー、焼き尽くせ！』」

“And, with that, the great dragon breathed out fire upon all those tied to the stakes. They writhed helplessly, burning to death in terrible agony….”

「その言葉とともに、巨大なドラゴンは杭に縛られた者に火を吐きました。かれらはなすすべもなくもがき、すさまじい苦悩のうちに焼け死にました……」

　1巻では名前だけだったヴェルミナアルドの描写。この人は本当に”destroy”するのが大好きなんですね！そして最後は、その言葉こそがかれを滅ぼすことに繋がったのでした。因果応報。

　私が「ドラゴンランス」という言葉を初めて目にしたのは、確か別のゲームブックの巻末にあった『奪われた竜の卵』の広告でした。なのでエルフの王子ギルサナスの登場は楽しみにしておりました、当初。しかし読み始めてみたらレイストリンに心奪われてしまいましたし、やっとギルサナス出たと思ったらいきなりホブゴブリンにぼこられて一行をトラブルに巻き込んでますし、タニスに対してはとげとげしいし、なんていうか（ため息）。
　見せ場はまだまだ遠いです。めげるな。

戦記2巻p83〜 帰郷

“You returned to the land of your birth, do you not?” Riverwind asked. “It dose not seem you are welcome.”
“Yes,” Tanis said grimly, aware of what the Plainsman was thinking. He knew Riverwind was not prying into personal affairs out of curiosity. In many ways, they were in more danger now than they had been with the Fewmaster.

「生まれ故郷に帰って来たのではないのか？歓迎されているようには見えないな」
「そうだ」タニスは平原人の考えていることがわかって、むっつりと答えた。リヴァーウィンドは個人的なことを好奇心で詮索しているのではない。多くの点で、かれらは今、長官といたときよりも大きな危険にさらされているのだ。

“You will be our honored guests. Please follow me.”

“Honored prisoners is more like it. This is going to be rough on you, my lad,” Flint said to Tanis in a low, gentle voice.
“I know, old friend.” Tanis rested his hand on the dwarf’s shoulder. “I know.”

「われわれの栄えある客人となるのだ。ついて来られよ」

「栄えある囚人と言ったほうが似つかわしいわい。タニス、おまえさんにはきついことになりそうだな」フリントが低くそっと言った。
「わかってる、フリント」タニスは＜ドワーフ＞の肩に手を休めた。「わかってるさ」

　前回フィズバンはレイストリンを"boy"呼ばわりしてましたが、フリントはタニスを"lad"と。所詮25や人間年齢にして30なんて坊やなのか、あるいは親愛の表現か。


Looking down upon the city, it seemed that peace and beauty unchanged from ages past must dwell in Qualinos, if it dwelled anywhere in Krynn.

　都を見おろしていると、もしクリンに永劫の昔から変わることのない美と平安があるとすれば、それはまさしくこのクォリノストをおいてほかないと思えた。

Sturm and Flint watched Tanis in concern--Flint because he alone had any idea of what the half-elf was suffering; Sturm because he knew what it was like returning to a home that didn’t want you.

　スタームとフリントは気がかりそうな目をタニスに向けている――フリントは唯一人＜ハーフ・エルフ＞の苦悩の原因に心当たりがあるからであり、スタームは招かれざる帰郷がどういうものか知っていたからである。

The knight laid his hand on Tanis’s arm. “Coming home isn’t easy, my friend, is it?” he asked.
“No,” Tanis answered softly. “I thought I had left this behind long ago, but now I know I never truly left at all. Qualinesti is part of me, no matter how much I want to deny it.”

　騎士がタニスの腕に手を置いた。「故郷に帰るのも楽なことではないな、タニス？」
「ああ」タニスは静かに答えた。「ずっと昔に済んだことだと思っていたのに、やはり済ませることなどできはしない。どんなに否定しようが、クォリノストはおれの一部なんだ」

Another pinned Tika’s blouse to the side of the cage, grazing her arm. Tika couldn’t remember being more terrified in her life--not even the night dragons struck Solace. She wanted to scream, she wanted Caramon to put his arm round her. But Caramon didn’t dare move.

　別の矢がティカの腕をかすり、ブラウスを檻のかべに射止めた。ティカは、これほど恐ろしい思いをした覚えは今までに――ソレースがドラゴンに襲撃された夜でさえ――なかった。彼女は叫び出したかった。キャラモンに腕をまわしてもらいたかった。しかし、キャラモンは動けない。

Tika caught sight of Goldmoon, shielding the injured Theros with her body, her face pale but calm. Tika pressed her lips together and drew a deep breath. Grimly she yanked the arrow out of the wood and tossed it to the floor, ignoring the stinging pain in her arm.

　ティカはゴールドムーンの姿を見つけた。彼女は青ざめてはいるが落ち着いた顔で、自分の体を、傷ついたテロスの楯にしている。ティカは唇を引き締めて深呼吸した。鋭い腕の痛みを考えないように、決然と矢を板から引き抜いて床に捨てる。

　雨あられと射かけられる矢の中、ティカも頑張ります。


Fizban did kneel down for a moment, but it was only to talk to Raistlin. “Say there, my boy,” he said as an arrow flew past right where he’d been standing. “Have you got a bit of guano on you? I’m out.”
“No, Old One,” Raistlin whispered frantically. “Get down!”

 フィズバンはしばしひざまずいたが、それはただレイストリンに話しかけるためだった。「ちょっと聞くが、坊や」今までかれが立っていたちょうどその場所を矢が飛んで行った。「蝙蝠の糞化石をひとかけ持っとらんかね。わしのは使っちまったんじゃ」
「ありません、老師」レイストリンは躍起になってささやいた。「伏せるんです！」

“No? Pity. Well, I guess I’ll have to wing it.”

「ない？残念じゃなあ。ならば、飛ばすのでやらずばなるまいて」

“What spell is he casting?” Tanis asked Raistlin. “Can you understand?”
The young mage listened intently, his brow furrowed. Suddenly Raistlin’s eyes opened wide. “NO!” he shrieked, trying to pull on the old magician’s robe to break his concentration. But it was too late.

「なんの呪文をかけているんだ？」タニスはレイストリンに訊いた。「わかるか？」
　若い魔法使いは眉間にしわを寄せて、じっと聞き入った。突然、レイストリンの目が大きく見開かれた。「だめです！」かれは金切り声をあげ、老魔術師のローブを引いて精神集中を破ろうとした。だが、遅すぎた。

“Take cover!” Raistlin threw himself beneath a bench.

“What is it?” Tanis yelled.
“Fireball!”

“The floor’s on fire!” Caramon yelled.

「隠れて！」レイストリンはベンチの下に身を投げた。

「なんだ？」タニスが叫んだ。
「火の球です」

「床が燃えている」キャラモンが叫んだ。

 “Wonderful spell. And did anyone say a word of thanks?” He asked wistfully.

「見事な呪文じゃないか。誰かひとことくらいお礼を言ってもよかろうに？」物足りなそうにかれは訊いた。

“NO!”たった二文字の一単語ですが、全て大文字で書くと、いかにも絶叫している雰囲気になるそうです（ネトゲ知識）。邦訳「だめです！」には傍点が振ってあります。

「おいこら、聞いとるのか？」老人は樫の木に向かってすりへった杖をふりまわした。

「たった今どくんじゃ、ほれ」
　木は答えない。どこうともしない。

“Mishakal!”

“You don’t look three hundred years old.”

「ミシャカルじゃな」
「あんたはとても三百歳には見えんわい」

“I’m not three hundred--“

“Of course you’re not. I’m sorry, my dear.”
“Never bring up a lady’s age in public.”

「あら、わたくしは三百歳では――」

「もちろん、違うさ。すまん、すまん」
「ご婦人の年齢は人前で言ってはいかんからな」

“My name?” The old man hesitated, frowning. “Fizban? Yes, that’s it, Fizban.”

「わしの名前？」老人は眉を寄せて言いよどんだ。「フィズバンかな？そう、それじゃ。フィズバンじゃ」

“Excuse me,” the old man said. “May I?” Fizban sat down beside Raistlin.

「ちょっと失礼」老人が言った。「かまわんかな？」フィズバンはレイストリンの隣に座りこんだ。

Raistlin’s eyes fluttered and opened. He looked up at the old man with a wild expression of terror and grasped Fizban’s wrist in his thin, frail hand.

　レイストリンはまつげをびくりとさせて目を開いたが、恐怖に満ちた表情でフィズバンを見あげると、痩せた細い手でその手首をつかんだ。

“Hullo,” Fizban beamed at him. “Name’s--uh--Fizban.” He shot a stern glance at Tasslehoff, daring the kender to laugh.
“You are…magi!” Raistlin whispered. His cough was gone.
“Why, yes, I suppose I am.”
“I am magi!” Raistlin said, struggling to sit up.
“No kidding!” Fizban seemed immensely tickled. “Small world, Krynn. I’ll have to teach you a few of my spells. I have one…a fireball…let’s see, how did that go?”

「やあ」フィズバンはにっこりと笑いかけた。「わしは――えーと――フィズバンじゃ」かれはタッスルホッフを、笑えるものなら笑ってみろと言うようにじろりと睨んだ。
「あなたは……魔導士」レイストリンはささやいた。咳が治まっていた。
「おや、そうとも、そのつもりじゃが」
「ぼくも魔導士です」レイストリンはなんとか起きあがろうとした。
「冗談じゃろ」フィズバンはひどく愉快そうだった。「魔導士がそんなにいるとなると、クリンも狭いわい。おまえさんにはいくつかわしの呪文を教えてやらずばなるまい。こんなものもあるぞ……火の球じゃ……待てよ、どうやるんじゃったかな？」

　フィズバン登場〜。のっけからこのボケまくり。火の球だけは勘弁してください、お願いします、老師！

前振りは別として、「廃都の黒竜の書」だけで22回かけちゃいましたよ。
「城砦の赤竜の書」はさくさく行きますよ！
でないと最後（消えた月の竜）まで何年かかることやら…

“What is the kender to me?”

「ケンダーがぼくにとってなんだと言うんだ？」

He looked almost pleadingly at Raistlin. The magician appeared to shrug.
“I will come peacefully,” Raistlin whispered, his golden eyes gleaming. “Just do not touch me.”
“No, of course not,” Toede muttered.

　かれはほとんどすがるような目つきでレイストリンを見た。魔法使いは肩をすくめたようだった。
「ぼくはおとなしく行きますよ」レイストリンはささやいた。金色の目が光っている。「ただ触らないでもらいたいだけです」
「よかろう、もちろんだ」トードはもごもごと言った。

“Know this!”
“I have cast a spell upon our belongings. Anyone who touches them will be slowly devoured by the great worm, Catyrpelius, who will rise from the Abyss and suck the blood from your veins until you are nothing more than a dried husk.”

「よく聞け！」
「ぼくはみんなの持ち物に呪文をかけた。これに触れる者は誰であろうと、奈落から立ち現われる大長虫キャティルペリウスにゆっくりと貪られ、血を啜られて干からびてしまうであろう」

　みんなのアイドル、大長虫キャティルペリウス。トード長官をおののかせ、すっかり場の主導権を握っちゃってるレイストリン。なるべく偏らないように、とは思っても、こうも見せ場続きじゃあ困っちゃいます。

Bupu rolled over to face him. Her eyes were red, her nose swollen. Tears streaked down her dirty face. She snuffled and wiped her hand across her nose.

　ブープーはくるりとかれのほうを向いた。目が真っ赤で、鼻が腫れている。汚れた顔に涙が筋を引いている。彼女はすすり上げて手で鼻を拭いた。

“I don’t want to leave you. I want to go with you,” she said brokenly, “but--oh--I will miss my people!” Sobbing, she buried her face in her hands.

「あなたと、はなれるの、いや。あなたと、いっしょにいきたい」彼女はとぎれがちにしゃべった。「でも――ぐすん――なかまとわかれるの、さびしい！」しゃくりあげながら、彼女は両手に顔を埋めた。

A look of infinite tenderness touched Raistlin’s face, a look no one in his world would ever see. He reached out and stroked Bupu’s coarse hair, knowing what it felt like to be weak and miserable, an object of ridicule and pity.

　レイストリンの顔にかぎりなく優しい表情が浮かんだ。かれのまわりにいる者が誰も見たことのない表情だった。かれは手をのばしてブープーのごわごわした髪をなでた。弱くて惨めであることが――嘲りと哀れみの対象であることがどんなものであるのか、かれは知っていた。

“Bupu,” he said, “you have been a good and true friend to me. You saved my life and the lives of those I care about. Now you will do one last thing for me, little one. Go back. I must travel roads that will be dark and dangerous before the end of my long journey. I cannot ask you to go with me.”

「ブープー」と、かれは言った。「君はぼくに対して、心からのよい友だちでいてくれた。ぼくの命も、ぼくが気にかけている人たちの命も救ってくれた。さあ、ぼくの最後のお願いだ、おちびさん、戻るんだ。ぼくはまだこれから長い旅をして、暗くて危険な道を通らなくてはいけない。君についてきてくれとは頼めないんだ」

“roads that will be dark and dangerous”この時どこまで先を見ていたのでしょうね、かれは。


Bupu lifted her head, her eyes brightening. Then a shadow fell across her face. “But you will be unhappy without me.”
“No,” Raistlin said, smiling, “my happiness will lie in knowing you are back with your people.”
“You sure?” Bupu asked anxiously.
“I am sure,” Raistlin answered.

　ブープーは顔をあげた。目が明るくなっている。しかし、彼女は顔をくもらせた。「でも、おらがいないと、あなた、ふしあわせ」
「大丈夫」レイストリンはほほえんだ。「ぼくは、君が無事に仲間のところへ戻ってくれるのが幸せなんだ」
「ほんと？」ブープーが身をのりだす。
「本当だ」レイストリンは答えた。

“Then I go,” Bupu stood up, “But first, you take my gift.” She began to rummage around in her bag.
“No, little one,” Raistlin began, remembering the dead lizard, “that’s not necessary--“

「なら、おら、いく」ブープーは立ちあがった。「でも、そのまえにおくりもの、もらって」彼女は袋の中をかきまわしはじめた。
「いいよ、おちびさん」レイストリンは、トカゲの死骸を思い出して、言いかけた。「そんなことしなくても――」

The words caught in his throat as he watched Bupu pull from her bag--a book! He stared in amazement, seeing the pale light of the chill morning illuminate silver runes on a night-blue leather binding.

　言葉は喉でつまった。ブープーが袋から取り出したもの――それは本だった！かれは驚きに目をみはった。冷たい朝の光が、夜藍色をした皮表紙の銀のルーン文字を照らしている。

Raistlin reached out a trembling hand. “The spellbook of Fistandantilus!” he breathed.
“You like?” Bupu asked shyly.
“Yes, little one!” Raistlin took the precious object in his hands and held it lovingly, stroking the leather. “Where--“

　レイストリンは震える手をのばした。「フィスタンダンティラスの呪文書！」かれは息をのんだ。
「これ、すき？」ブープーがはにかみながら言う。
「うん、おちびさん！」レイストリンは貴重な品を両手に取って、愛おしそうに皮表紙をなでた。「どこで――」

“I take from dragon,” Bupu said, “when blue light shine. I glad you like. Now, I go. Find Highbulp Phudge I, the great.” She slung her bag over her shoulder. Then she stopped and turned. “That cough, you sure you not want lizard cure?”
“No, thank you, little one,” Raistlin said, rising.

「どらごんのところから。あおいひかり、でたとき。あなたがこれすきで、おら、うれしい。じゃあ、もういくね。バルプ大王ファッジ一世、みつける」彼女は袋を肩にかけた。と、立ち止まってふり返る。「あのせき――あなた、トカゲのくすり、ほんとにいらない？」
「大丈夫だよ、ありがとう、おちびさん」レイストリンは立ちあがった。

Bupu looked at him sadly, then--greatly daring--she caught his hand in hers and kissed it swiftly. She turned away, her head bowed, sobbing bitterly.

　ブープーは悲しそうにかれを見ていたが――勇気をふりしぼり――両手でかれの手を包みこんで素早くキスした。彼女はうつむいて顔をそむけ、激しくしゃくりあげた。

　他の種族に不潔とみなされ、「おら、かわいくないの、しってる」ブープーが、どれほどの勇気をふりしぼったことでしょう。レイストリン以外の誰が、心からそれを受け容れられたでしょう。


Raistlin stepped forward. He laid his hand on her head. If I have any power at all, Great One, he said inside himself, power that has not yet been revealed to me, grant that this little one goes through her life in safety and happiness.

　レイストリンは足を踏み出した。彼女の頭に手を置く。心の中でかれは言った。大いなる方よ、もしぼくに力が――まだ明かされていない力があるものならば、どうかこの小さき者につつがなく幸せな生涯を送らせ給え。

　ここでレイストリンが呼びかけている“Great One”とはおそらく、まだこの時点ではその正体がわかっていない謎の声の主でしょう。
　この”grant”はただの願いにとどまらず、実際に効力を発揮しています。まばゆい光がブープーを暖め、そして彼女の家路を守りました。その力は一体どこから来たのでしょうか？謎の声の主、フィスタンダンティラスがそんな気を遣ってくれる筈はないですね。そして神々でもないでしょう、なんであれレイストが神に祈っていないことは確かですから。
　それは、たぶん、ドラゴンオーブの支配からかれを守ってくれたその力なのではないでしょうか。だとしたら、大パー=サリアン、やはりあなたは間違っていたのです。（この続きは伝説1巻のあのシーンで語ります）


“Farewell, Bupu,” he said softly.
She stared at him with wide, adoring eyes, then turned and ran off as fast as her floppy shoes would carry her.

「さようなら、ブープー」かれは静かに言った。
　彼女は憧れをこめた大きな瞳でかれを見つめた。そして、背を向けると、がばがばの靴で精いっぱい急いで駆け去った。

“Stand back,” Raistlin said, staggering to his feet.
“Raist, don’t!” His brother caught hold of him. “You’re too weak.”
“I have strength for one more spell,” the mage whispered. “But it may not work. If they see I am magi, they may be able to resist my magic.”

「さがってください」レイストリンがよろよろと立ちあがった。
「レイスト、やめてくれ！」かれの兄がつかまえる。「その体では……」
「もうひとつ呪文をかけるくらいの力はある」魔法使いはささやいた。「でも、効かないかもしれません。ぼくが魔導士だとわかったら、抵抗するのも可能ですから」

“Hide behind Caramon’s shield,” Tanis said swiftly. The big man thrust his body and his shield in front of his brother.

「キャラモン、楯の陰に隠れろ」タニスがすかさず言った。大男は、弟の前に体ごと楯をつき出した。

 The mist swirled around them, concealing them from draconian eyes but also preventing them from seeing the draconians. The pot rose, inch by inch, the chain creaking and lurching upward. Raistlin stood poised behind Caramon’s shield, his strange eyes staring, waiting for the mists to part.

　靄が渦巻いて、かれらをドラコニアンの目から隠してくれたが、同時にその姿も見えなくなった。鍋はゆらゆらと鎖をきしませながら少しずつあがってゆく。レイストリンは、キャラモンの楯のうしろでつりあいをとっていた。異形の目を凝らし、靄が分かれるのを待っている。

Raistlin spoke. Caramon moved his shield and the mage spread his thin fingers. A ball of white shot from his hands, hitting the draconian squarely in the chest.

　レイストリンが口を開いた。キャラモンがさっと楯を引くと、魔法使いは細い指を広げた。白い球が両手の先からとび出し、ドラコニアンの胸を正面から打った。

“There’s still one more!” Raistlin gasped, sinking to his knees. “Hold me up, Caramon, help me stand.” The mage began to cough violently, blood tricking from his mouth.

「まだだ、もう一匹いる！」レイストリンは喘ぎながら、がくりと膝を折った。「支えてくれ、キャラモン、立たせてくれ」魔法使いは激しく咳きこんだ。口から血がしたたり落ちる。

“Raist!” his brother pleaded, dropping his shield and catching his fainting twin. “Stop! There’s nothing you can do. You’ll kill yourself!”

「レイスト！」兄は楯を取り落とし、失神寸前の双子の弟を受け止めて、哀願した。「やめろ！もう無理だ。おまえが死んでしまう」

A look of command was enough. The warrior supported his brother as the mage began to speak again the eerie-sounding language of magic.

　ひと睨みされると十分だった。戦士は弟をかかえ起こした。魔法使いは、再び不気味な魔法の言葉を唱えはじめた。

The remaining draconian hesitated, still hearing the yells of its fallen companion. It knew the human was a magic-user. It also knew that it could probably resist the magic.

　もう一匹のドラコニアンは躊躇した。落ちた仲間の悲鳴がまだ聞こえている。この人間が魔法を使うのはわかった。おそらく、その魔法に抵抗するのは可能だろう。

But this human facing it was like no human magic-user it had ever encountered. The human’s body seemed weak practically to the point of death, bur a strong aura of power surrounded him.

　しかし、目の前のこの人間は、今まで出会った魔法の使い手とはまったくちがう。体は弱々しくてほとんど死にかけているくせに、強力な霊気に包まれている。

The mage raised his hand, pointing at the creature. The draconian cast one last, vicious glance at the companions, then turned and fled. Raistlin, unconscious, sank into his brother’s arms as the pot completed its journey to the surface.

　魔法使いが怪物に向けて手をあげた。敵は最後に一行をぎろりと睨むと、踵を返して逃げ出した。鍋が上階にたどり着き、レイストリンは気を失って兄の腕の中にくずおれた。

　少々長いですが、あまりに格好いいのでほぼ全文あげてしまいました、息詰まる昇降機での魔法戦。中の人は今「城砦の赤竜」の佳境なんですが、これだけの奮闘を目の当たりにして、まだレイストリンが裏切り者かもしれないなんてよく思えたものですね。言動が怪しい人はまだまだいるのに。ああ思い出しても頭にくる。

…次回はいよいよあのシーンですよー！
